Nelson Weir Does It Again

Combine Fancier of the Year for Nelson Weir

Now that the rush surrounding Xmas work wise and Blackpool 2010 is over, I now have the opportunity to catch up with a couple of dinner presentations, namely the Orchard Combine and the Irish South Road Federation (Next Week). Many will be aware that I have drastically cut back in my pigeon activities over recent months with Homer now looking after all matters concerning Ireland's Own Pigeon Auctions with Wesley Sawyers coming on board to take care of all auctions in the North of Ireland and Henry Byrne on board to take care of matters in the South of Ireland. I will do more of an overseeing of all business matters both surrounding the Auctions and of course the ever increasing http://www.pigeonnetwork.com site, with Homer looking after the administration of the aforementioned also. With an ever increasing work load personally, sadly I could only attend a couple of Prize Presentations in 2009 both held on the same weekend, which happened to be one that I had already booked off apologies, to all the others that I had to turn down.

The first event that Celeste and myself were to make an appearance at was the very professionally run Orchard Combine Championship Club Presentation Night, held this time at the plush Digby's in Killylea, that being the Killylea in Co.Armagh, not the Killyleagh in Co.Down something I was gladly reminded off before setting off. It was a miserable night for driving with strong winds and heavy rain, but that had little to no effect firstly on the large turn out and secondly the party atmosphere within the Digby's establishment which is steeped in so much history, with scores of old memorabilia from the minute you enter the building. Upon arrival Celeste and myself were welcomed by the hard working Secretary Sonya Beattie and her husband Alan surprisingly this is only Sonya's second year at the helm, without delay she duly introduced us to the officials and fellow guests Mr & Mrs Gerald Creaney, Gerald now loft manager for the mighty Willie Neil of Annaghmore with some 40 years involvement with pigeons and this was the first time he had been invited to a pigeon dinner to present awards, this was a great surprise to myself, perhaps I might be able to call on him for some help in 2010.

The Orchard Combine is one of the largest in Northern Ireland and continues on an annual basis to go from strength to strength and this is very much apparent by everything connected to the awards night, firstly the level of organization and professionalism, the large crowd containing many of the greats of the pigeon world here in N.Ireland and of course the ever increasing amount of cups and awards that are to be presented. The prize table mirrors very much like the major organizations as far as substance is concerned the Orchard Combine can be very proud of everything that they have achieved to date.

The four course dinner this being my first of the 2009 prize distribution season was served on time, and what a high quality meal it was from start to finish, faultless and that coming from somebody who has worked in the industry for years, of course not forgetting the amount of pigeon dinners I have attended during that time. Something that caught my imagination was the dessert, a large plate with 5 different small desserts on the single serving, which contained all the favourites WONDERFUL.

Standing in for the 'Quiet Man' Mr Nelson Weir as Chairman was the ever capable Ivan Parkes who rose to the occasion fantastically. Nelson Weir was reserving all his energy for carrying all the cups away for he won for a record amount of times Orchard Combine Fancier of the Year. What a smashing year Nelson had once again with his exceptional team of Busschaert and Frans Van Wildermeesch pigeons, they are elite to say the least and having sold for Nelson at Auction in Dublin in November they were without any doubt one of the best drafts of pigeons ever to be sold in Dublin and I expect many good reports from the fanciers who had the privilege off purchasing them. Finishing runner-up to Nelson was the ever consistent Eamon Grew of Charlemont who knows how to race a pigeon for sure; Eamon's experience is obviously rubbing off on son Patrick who finished 4th best over-all with the fabulous Gerard Campbell and daughter Amy taking the Bronze Medal in third place over-all. The Orchard Combine is made up of members based predominantly in Section E of the might NIPA with a small number who live of the fringes of the boundary racing within Section A of the NIPA. I will to give the members due credit and go through the programme starting from the first O/Bird result of 2009 carrying on into the Y/Birds and will finish with the National Flying Club races, I will list the first three positions for each race and where applicable list the NIPA Section and Open positions and birdage were available to let you the fancy see the level of competition that the Orchard Combine members are winning against. Tullamore (1) flown on the 11th April 1st Nelson Weir of Loughgall finishing 1st Section E and 1st Open NIPA 823 members sending 15,013 Birds; finishing 2nd Orchard Combine, 4th Section and 5th Open was again Nelson Weir and to complete the top three same man again finishing 10th Section and 12th Open NIPA. Tullamore (2) flown on the 18th April 1st Cooney Bros of Monaghan finishing 1st Section E and 24th Open NIPA with 1133 members sending 24,924 pigeons; finishing 2nd Orchard Combine, 2nd Section E and 27th Open NIPA was Ivan Parkes & Son of Armagh, and taking the Bronze award was the Fancier of the Year Nelson Weir finishing 4th Section E and 45th Open NIPA. 3rd Race of the O/Bird season was flown from Roscrea and taking 1st Orchard Combine was the E Murtagh & Sons partnership from Armagh, they finished 1st Section E and 5th Open NIPA with 1223 members sending a superb 27,770 pigeons; in runner-up spot from Roscrea we had the ever consistent father & daughter team namely G & A Campbell once again of Armagh they finished 20th Section E and 141st Open NIPA, with the Loughgall based Willie Corrigan completing the top three finishing 23rd Section E and 145th Open NIPA. The racing programme moved onto Clonmel for the liberation on the 2nd of May and it was a superb result for runner-up for Fancier of the Year namely Eamon Grew of Charlemont who took the first three in the Combine on a day that over 30,201 pigeons were liberated with the NIPA Eamon's three pigeon finished on the first 250 of the Open result. Eamon Grew's pigeons fell in love with the Clonmel race point for the following week he was to complete the double taking the first three in the Combine yet again, how is that for racing he went on to finish 1st, 21st and 22nd Section E NIPA finishing 26th Open NIPA with the Section Winner with 26,870 pigeons competing. It was a return to Tullamore on the 16th of May for the NIPA and topping the Combine was the E Murtagh & Sons team of Armagh they went on to win the NIPA Section E and more importantly the NIPA Open with 626 members sending 11,897 pigeons in runner-up spot in the Combine we have G & A Campbell once again finishing a superb 2nd Section E and 2nd Open NIPA only 7 yards behind the winner (did both come together into Armagh ?) and completing the top three we have the man of the moment Nelson Weir finishing 3rd Section and 4th Open NIPA. The first of the Nationals was next up for the Combine members that being the Rosscarbery O/Bird Inland National liberated on Sunday 24th of May in a Southerly wind it was the Monaghan loft of Stephen O'Brien to come out on top finishing a fantastic 1st Section E and 20th Open against 7,602 pigeons winning Stephen £170, runner-up was Richard Parkes & Son of Armagh finishing 15th Section E and 93rd Open in the National collecting £49 finishing 3rd in the Combine and starting to find form was Patrick Grew finishing 17th Section and 108th Open winning £184. For the second week running we had a Sunday liberation this time from Fermoy on the 24th of May wind once again from the South and a strong convoy of 17,067 pigeons released at 8.45am, 1st in the Orchard Combine was Gerard Campbell and daughter Amy who finished 1st Section and 4th Open NIPA, the father and daughter team where in form for the finished runner-up also in the Combine finishing 11th Section E and 73rd Open and completing the top three was the Murtagh team from Armagh who topped the Combine and NIPA Open from Tullamore nine days earlier, on this occasion the loft finished 86th Open. The first of the cross channel events was next up for the Combine members from Talbenny in South Wales can be difficult enough this particular race point but on this occasion what a race the Combine enjoyed, over-all in the NIPA Ronnie Williamson extended his lead as far as NIPA Open success's go with a superb winner some 70 yards in front of the next best, that in fact was the INFC National Champions of 2009 namely Malachy Maguire & Son. Getting back on track with the Orchard Combine the Monaghan loft of Brendan Corley was to come to the fore in the first cross channel event of 2009 finishing 13th Section E and 39th Open with 19,942 pigeons competing, finishing runner-up was the inform and consistent Nelson Weir finishing 14th Section E and 42nd Open with Michael McClinchey of Charlemont completing the top three finishing a tidy 52nd Open over-all. One of the earliest liberations of 2009 was from Fermoy on June 6th with 377 members sending 4768 pigeons liberated in a North West Wind at 6.15am. It was the turn of the highly respected Monaghan loft of Stephen O'Brien who topped the Orchard Combine finishing 7th Section E and 15th Open NIPA on a Velocity of 1116, finishing runner-up to Stephen was Patrick Grew who enjoyed a good race finishing both 2nd & 3rd Combine where both pigeons finished 9th & 12th Section and 29th & 50th Open respectively. We moved on from our earliest liberation into the first Monday race and it was to be the second cross channel experience from Talbenny in South Wales on the 8th of June, to come through for the Red Card in the Orchard Combine and winning the NIPA Section and 15 yards away from winning the NIPA Open was the Monaghan loft of H Gormley & Son who timed a three year old Belgium import in tip top condition, it didn't stop their for the Combine members for finishing 2nd combine and 2nd Section E was the highly respected Armagh loft of Eamon & Mathew Curran (thanks for the beers in Blackpool by the way) the loft also finished a superb 3rd Open NIPA with 1038 members sending 14,664 pigeons, completing the top three in the Combine from the second visit to Talbenny was the winner of the race from Fermoy that being Stephen O'Brien of Monaghan finishing 4th Section E and 5th Open NIPA, it was a great racing day for the Section E lofts in the NIPA with the members claiming 30 positions of the first 45 in the Open result. With the Channel programme now in full swing next up for the fanciers was a trip to Bude, the NIPA convoy consisted of just over 7,000 hopefuls entered by 771 competing lofts, the Orchard Combine always send a high representation to this race and coming out on tops to collect the second Combine success of the O/Bird season was the Armagh loft of E Murtagh & Sons the loft had a super result finishing 16th Section E and 28th Open NIPA, in runner-up spot was the Fancier of the Year Nelson Weir himself finishing 17th Section and 35th Open with the P Kelly & Bevin team completing the top three in the Combine. Flown on the same day as Bude for the fanciers was the Mallow 5 Bird event a race that many consider to be the fairest in the programme where each loft competing within the NIPA can only compete with a maximum of 5 pigeons, collecting the Red Card in the Orchard Combine was the Monaghan loft of Brendan Corley on a velocity of 1828ypm it was a super pigeon on the day also lifting the NIPA Section Diploma for 1st Section E and finished 5th Open NIPA it was to be a race for the Monaghan men for finishing 2nd was Gerry Swift on 1796ypm collecting 3rd Section E and 19th Open ahead just on point of a yard from their fellow Club Mates namely Cooney Bros who finished 3rd Orchard Combine, 4th Section E and 20th Open NIPA. Penzance was to be the next big test for the Orchard Combine members with the pigeons liberated at 8.00am on Saturday 20th of June in a North West Wind just to make it that extra bit harder. Coming out on top in a close contest was Nelson Weir on a velocity of 1014ypm finishing 5th Section E and 9th Open NIPA with 866 members sending 9,054 pigeons, runner-up was the Ace loft of Eamon & Mathew Curran also on 1014ypm finishing 10th Open with Nelson Weir completing the top three in the Combine on 1013ypm which seen a 12th Open performance for this one. In the corresponding Classic event run in conjunction with the Penzance race all three positions in the Orchard Combine where filled as per previous result, although the difference being they finished a bit further up the NIPA Open result with a number of members opting not to enter their pigeons in the Classic, Nelson Weir finished 5th & 8th Open collecting £470 in winnings with Eamon & Mathew Curran splitting the two in 6th Open collecting £160. As we moved towards the end of June start of July we entered the French cross channel events with the first to present itself being the St Malo O/B National flown on Thursday 25th of June some 575 members entered 1904 pigeons, and like many Clubs' Combine etc when you enter the extreme distance events you have a tendency to see a few new names about the result, winner of 1st Orchard Combine is a fancier who knows a thing or two about Distance racing that being Sam Corrigan who finished a tremendous 3rd Section E and 7th Open NIPA collecting just short of £1,000 in pool and prize money on a velocity of 1221ypm, in runner-up spot in the Combine we have the loft of James Graham on 1170ypm finishing 9th Section and 16th Open over-all with the inform Monaghan loft of Cooney Bros coming through to complete the top three finishing 16th Section E and 51st Open NIPA lifting just short of £90. Back to the Inland Nationals with the NIPA on Saturday 27th of June that being the Yearling Cocks and Yearling Hens National flown from Rosscarbery. Starting with the Cocks and 1st Combine fell to the Monaghan loft of Richard Mulligan on a velocity of 1403ypm, how close Richard came to National success finishing runner-up to a loft that knows a thing or two about winning Nationals that being the Ace loft of Glen Buckley and son Johnny. Richard Mulligan finished 1st Orchard Combine, 2nd Section E and 2nd Open NIPA National. Runner-up in the Combine was the Armagh loft of G & A Campbell Gerard being an NIPA Committee man still finds the time to race a good team of pigeons, Gerard went on finish 4th Section E and 6th Open in the National with fellow Club Mates Ivan Parkes & Son completing the top three in the Combine with Ivan finishing 5th Section E and 7th Open NIPA. In the corresponding Hens National it was the turn of Anthony Geraghty to take top honours Anthony I had the pleasure of meeting in Galway at the One Loft Race, Anthony finished 8th Section E with his good arrival and finished 16th Open in the National result, finishing runner-up and also third place was the inform Cooney Bros of Monaghan who timed a couple of pigeons together both recording 1343ypm which seen them finish 11th & 12th Section E and 28th & 29th Open. Well that raps up the O/Bird programme with regards the NIPA racing and I think the members can be very proud of their achievements in 2009.

The Y/Bird season kicked off for the Orchard Combine members on Saturday 18th of July with a race from Tullamore this being one of the favoured Area Liberations taking 1st, 2nd & 3rd Combine was a fancier who can certainly race youngsters that being Nelson Weir the Combine Fancier of the Year here in the first Y/Bird event of 2009 he timed three together to all record 1387ypm. The following week was to be a repeat result for Nelson Weir and the Orchard Combine taking the first three positions and once again all on the same yard 1678ypm, Nelson finished 10th, 11th & 12th Section E also 10th, 11th and 12th Open NIPA but that is only part of the over-all picture for in fact Nelson recorded 10 arrivals all within the first 45 of the NIPA Open result. The Area Liberations continued with the next race flown on the 1st of August was to be a super result for Eamon Grew finishing 1st & 2nd Combine on 1804 and 1803ypm ahead of the Nelson Weir set up who completed the top three in the Combine. The first of the Mass Liberations followed on Saturday 8th of August from Roscrea taking the honours in the Combine was Gerard Campbell and daughter Amy of Armagh finishing 1st & 2nd with a couple of arrivals land together to record a velocity of 1490ypm in third spot was the extremely hard working Secretary that being Sonya Beattie who amazingly finds time to race pigeons. A change of race point to Clonmel was the order of the day for the members on the 15th August with a liberation at 12.15pm in a South West Wind it turned out to be a case of normal service resumed for the Weir loft finishing 1st & 2nd Orchard Combine with a couple of good arrivals returning together recording a velocity of 1666ypm these two for Nelson finished 20th & 21st Section E and 120th and 121st Open NIPA with 973 NIPA members sending 22,372 pigeons. Patrick Grew was to complete the top three in the Combine from Clonmel on a velocity of 1626ypm. Fermoy followed a week later and what a result it turned out to be for Sonya Beattie topping the Orchard Combine on a velocity of 1650ypm which seen her good arrival finish 8th Section E and 28th Open NIPA with 955 members sending 21,309 pigeons, Gerard & Amy Campbell where to complete the top three in the Combine result finishing 2nd & 3rd with again a couple of arrivals landing together they finished 20th & 22nd Section and 95th and 97th Open NIPA. The first of the Y/Bird National events for the Orchard Combine membership followed a week later and it was to be from Talbenny on Saturday 29th of August, taking top spot was William Corrigan on a Velocity of 1137ypm, Willie's pigeon finished 20th Section and 60th Open NIPA Y/Bird National with 4,183 pigeons competing from the Welsh Race Point. The loft of D & C McArdle was next best ahead of Eamon Grew who completed the top three in the Combine result; the aforementioned two pigeons finished 66th and 85th Open NIPA National respectively. On the same day the NIPA organized a come back race from Tullamore for its members, the event was well supported by the Orchard Combine members who were part of the overall total of 8,822 pigeons liberated at 10.00am in a fresh south west wind. 1st in the Orchard Combine was the in form Nelson Weir recording a velocity of 1687ypm which seen him finish 9th Section E against 1,587 pigeons, next best in the Orchard Combine was Willie Corrigan who nearly completed the double on the day, Willie's pigeon finished 14th Section from Tullamore and honours fell to the Monaghan loft of Stephen O'Brien to complete the top three within the Orchard Combine result. To start the month of September the Orchard Combine members had a race from Fermoy also on the same day the Fermoy 5 Bird Championship race was held. The 5 Bird Championship seen the E & M Curran partnership of Armagh come to the fore once again finishing 9th Section E and 67th Open NIPA, Hawthorne & Prescott where next best finishing 13th Section and 78th Open with Nelson Weir completing the top three in the Combine from the 5 Bird Championship. From the Fermoy race things stayed the same in the Combine with regards the Red Card going to E & M Curran finishing 43rd Section with 155 members sending 3,273 pigeons, finishing 2nd and 3rd Combine was Stephen Fields & Son of Armagh timing a couple of good arrivals together on a Velocity of 1711. Rosscarbery Y/Bird Inland National was the last race of the season for the Combine members competing with the Mighty NIPA flown on the 12th of September the 4,399 pigeons entered by 529 members where liberated at 11.30am in a North Easterly Wind coming out on top in the Orchard Combine was yet again an Armagh loft and one that had a terrific season namely Gerard & Amy Campbell finishing 2nd Section E and 9th Open in the National result collecting £60, finishing runner-up went to Patrick Grew who finished 5th Section E and 18th National collecting £32, Packie Coughlan of the strong and competitive Monaghan HPS completed the top three in the Combine and finished an impressive 19th National to round off and excellent success story for the members of the Orchard Combine competing within the very strong and competitive NIPA.

To complete the list of stunning racing performances put up by fanciers within the Orchard Combine I will now focus on the Irish National Flying Club races during 2009 starting once again with the O/Birds. First race up was the Bamfords sponsored Skibbereen Inland National, 3,775 pigeons sent by 492 competing lofts were liberated at 10.30am on Thursday 28th May in a light South West Wind and tops within the Combine was the Armagh loft of E Murtagh & Sons finishing 1st Orchard Combine and 203rd Open, 2nd Combine went to P Campbell & Sons with Michael McClinchey taking the third spot. The Samuel McCausland sponsored INFC Yearling National from Sennen Cove was next up for the Orchard Combine membership and the 4,134 pigeons entered by 786 members were liberated on June 11th at 8.00am in a Light West Wind, the honours in the Combine went to the Charlemont loft of Michael McClinchey who finished 3rd Combine from Skibbereen in the previous National result. This one worked out somewhat better, for the pigeon timed finished 43rd Open lifting £553 for the loft, what a performance by Michael for this was the only pigeon entered by himself, next best and taking runner-up spot in the Combine was the Monaghan loft of Richard Mulligan finishing 161st Open with the third place going to James Graham on a Velocity of 1071ypm. July seen a couple of races with the INFC first one up was the much awaited Bucktons sponsored INFC Kings Cup from Plaudren in France, best in the Orchard Combine from this prestigious race was the ever impressive William Corrigan on a Velocity of 1356ypm which seen the loft finish a very strong 17th Open winning £196 for the 488 mile fly, next best we have William's brother Sam of the Loughgall HPS who recorded a Velocity of 1317ypm to finish 43rd Open winning a fine total of £538. To complete the top three in the Orchard Combine we have G & A Campbell of Armagh who can produce the performances from the shortest to the longest race points, Gerard and Amy finished 108th Open only sending the three flying 483 miles. The Versele-Laga sponsored Picauville Friendship National was the next event for consideration by the Orchard Combine membership and what a hard race it turned out to be with only 22 pigeons making it back in three days from a liberation of 1,014 pigeons, the one and only arrival into the Orchard Combine was P Campbell & Sons of Armagh on a velocity of 451ypm for the 410 mile fly, what an exceptional Combine Winner. The Gem Supplements sponsored O/Hens National is flown in conjunction with the Natural Granen sponsored Penzance Y/Bird National and both were liberated on Wednesday the 9th of September at 08.15 in a North Wind, best O/Hen recorded into the Orchard Combine was that of Patrick O'Neill on a Velocity of 390ypm. With the Y/Bid event the Monaghan loft of Peter Tierney topped the Combine finishing a very commendable 4th Open with only 2 entries away to the race flying a distance of 291 miles. Peter lifted a total of £429 for his efforts, taking the next couple of positions in the Combine we have the partnership of D & C McArdle of Armagh who finished in 62nd and 64th Open collecting a combined total of £190, must point out also that the McArdle loft had only four entries in the race, good team performance. To finish the National performances we have the Harkers sponsored Skibbereen Y/Bird National flown on the 19th of September the 3,118 pigeon entered by 411 competing lofts were liberated at 11.30am in a variable wind. The leading fancier in the Combine in what was the last race of 2009 was the father and son partnership from Armagh namely E & M Curran on a velocity of 1507ypm which seen them finish 25th Open winning £450 next best was the same partnership finishing 138th Open and the top three was completed by Eamon Grew of Charlemont finishing 203rd Open.

What can you say after researching all of the above other than a very well done to all the prize winners and please be assured, that was only scratching the surface taking on board the top three in the Combine each week, what space would not be required in covering say the top six. Without any doubt outstanding performances and ones that the members of the Orchard Combine should be very proud to be a part off. On closing I hope I have went some way in giving credit to all concerned and on behalf of my wife Celeste and myself thank the Officials and members of the Orchard Combine for yet again another remarkable evening. On finishing I would like to wish the entire membership every success in 2010.
