Skibbereen OB National - Tuesday 4th June 2024

It was in 1932 that His Majesty King George V presented a new cup to the Irish National Flying Club to be known as The King George V Challenge Cup and was to be awarded to the winner of the OB Grand National.

The 1932 Grand National race was flown from Les Sables at a distance of some 600 miles and the race was won by R Hawthorn from Ligoniel in North Belfast. This race was flown under IHU rules and it was not until 1948 that the Kings Cup was flown under IHU and RPRA rules. The race in 1948 was won by Sammy Robinson from Belfast.

The Irish National Flying Club have a six race programme for the 2020 season which enables its members to compete in the inland Nationals or over the channel at the very highest level. I hope you will enjoy using the website as it will be a source of information through out the season. Good luck to all members competing in this years Nationals. Ronnie Johnston Patron INFC.

The INFC has 2,100 members across Ireland. The 6 Race Programme includes the famous Kings Cup from France. Friendship Nat is also France, Ylr Nat Sennen Cove, YB Nat Penzance and OB and YB Nat from Skibbereen. INFC Race report by Homer

1st Middle Section & 1st Open INFC Devine & Himli Skerries – Vel 1606 flying 189 miles winning £91 and Ronnie Johnston Challenge Cup.
Fantastic result for the partners winning was never in doubt after the early bird into the Skerries. Devine&Hilmi - We were over the moon when we discovered that our little chequer yearling hen Be23/6075663 called Bernie had won the Skibbereen old bird Inland National with a velocity of 1606y/min flying a distance of 189 miles 1543yards, 23 yards in front of the next pigeon. We got the pigeon from our good friend Tommy Nelson in the ballymun club. The little hen was on 6 day old eggs when sent to the race. As a young bird she took few cards including 17th section, 80th open Skibbereen INFC young bird National.

2nd & 3rd Middle Section Hopkins Bros & Sons Blanchardstown – Vel 1583, 1582 flying 175 miles winning 308.

4th Middle Section J Boothman & Son Jun Blanchardstown – Vel 1575, flying 176 miles winning £97.
My yearly check hen that was 4th National Skibbereen is a very good racer for me, she is breed from a double grandson of Kittel paired to a granddaughter of Strik/ Sagan. This pair of pigeons have breed me pigeons to win at club, Fed, and National level. This is another loft most consistent in the INFC races.

5th Middle Section Tomas Kavanagh Drogheda & District – Vel 1570, flying 191 miles winning £22
The loft won 2nd, 3rd and 5th in last seasons YB Skibbereen and has followed that up with 5th in Skibbereen Old Birds.

I'd like to congratulate my mates Jason Byrne and Dan Bradley from Newtown In Co Wicklow on finishing 10th 11th 12th Nat plus a few other positions in the Skibb Nat but mainly on topping the South of Ireland from an INFC race for the 3rd time in only a few years. The lads also topped the South of Ireland from the Sennen cove yearling Nat and YB Penzance in the last few years and now they have done it in the Skibbereen national. I doubt there's many if any other loft who has topped the South of Ireland in those 3 races in recent years, well done lads super result well deserved, and well done all 1st Section and Nat winners. Jamie Kelly PO.
Dan Bradley supplied the following - The partnership is made up of Jason Byrne and Dan Bradley with the help of Dans father Andy. This is the 3rd time since 2019 that this loft has won the south section including 1st South Section in 2019 INFC Young Bird Grand National from Penzance and 1st South Section in 2021 INFC Yearling National Sennan Cove

1st South Section IHU 23 S 032093 - Blue Hen - 'Lucky 93'
One of the many pigeons from the 'Lucky Lines' in our loft. Sire of this pigeon was bred by Thomas Maguire call 'Tomo' from his famous 'Lambrecht Cock', 'Tomo' won 3 weeks in a row as a young bird in 2018 before getting injured. The Dam (Jays Girl) was a sticker doncker bought in a kit of youngster from Thomas Maguire in 2019. This hen was a latebred hen in 2023 and only had one race as a youngster. This season she has raced the full programme prior to entering the Skibbereen National.
2nd South Section GB21P-27232 - Cheq Cock - 'Mr Unlucky'
Full Brother to Lucky 93 and from the Lucky Lines. This cock has 11 x top 10 cards over the last few seasons and now has 7x 2nds where he has been beaten by loft mates 5 times. Waspreviously 31st South Section 50th Open in the INFC Skibbereen Young Bird National in 2021.

This hen is a great granddaughter of the Lambrecht Cock. The Grandsire of this hen was a half brother to Tomo, he won 5 x 1st Club including 1st Fed Kinsale for us. The Sire is a son of this cock when paired to a hen we were gifted from Ray Matthews and Family. The Dam (called Kasabian) is a hen we bought from a kit of youngsters from Wayne Doonan, she was young bird of the year in 2021 in the Newtown & Kilpedder club.
