Farming Life - Wed 14/04/10

The News Letter, now in its fourth century of continuous publication, has come a long way since it first saw the light of day in 1737. On a visit to Northern Ireland, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth described the longevity of the newspaper as "an achievement in which the people of Northern Ireland can take great pride". Pigeon News is featured in the Farming Life supplement each Wednesday.

Farming Life - Wed 14/04/10

Post by willie reynolds »

On the best weekend of the year racing started for the NIPA who released in Tullamore County Offaly at Noon, first reports are for an excellent race and fantastic returns. Not all clubs sent this first week but with the good weather set to continue it will be a larger entry next time. Best reported over the weekend is Brendan Corley in Monaghan where we had a lot of early birds and then a big batch up into Derry City with the best bird timed yet again by Mr & Mrs Paul Maxwell of the Foyle.

A bit of a slow start again on the news front, a lot trying out fax machines for the first time and I suppose others getting used to e-mail. Remember to meet tight deadlines we do require all the results as early as possible, if you are not listed it was either late or did not arrive. So long as you have the authority to pass on club info, just a few news snips are helpful and a photo, although it will not just be possible to have them all published. We will as usual do our best, I know some problems do exist but don’t be put off getting your club the publicity they deserve. Space is available for every single club in Ireland to have their result listed free of charge, with photo on www.pigeonnetwork.com

Mid Antrim race season started at Tullamore in County Offaly, a race dominated by lofts in Rasharkin. A great race finish with Milliken & Barkley having two arrivals ahead of the much improved Steele & McNeill. The Rasharkin winner recorded velocity 1739, but was pipped for the Mid Antrim Combine by Danny Dixon who races into Dunloy. His Blue Cheq cock on widowhood was timed at 14.14hrs recording velocity 1745 for 133 miles, this top Lambrects/Jacob topped the Combine last season in the Rosscarbery YB National. Next best was Paddy McManus who had another super card in the Ahoghill Flying Club, his Blue Hen was Karl Boeckx through birds obtained from Derek Parr. This bird won 1st Combine last season as a youngster. Paddy had a best ever season in 2009 and has started very well, he intends to have a go at all competition and I wish him well. Release in Tullamore was at 12 Noon and we had a bit of East in the wind, next week we go back to Tullamore.

Mid Antrim Combine – Champions League

The following lofts will compete for their clubs in the Seasons Champions League which was won last season by Danny Dixon of Rasharkin. Four lofts are nominated in the League Competition and the top winners go through to the Knock-Out stage. Thanks again to James Harris who is keeping the records. The opening race will be flown from Tullamore on Saturday 17th April. The draw for the group stage was made by Mid Antrim Secretary George McDowell and Homer at Ballymena Pigeon Supplies on Monday evening. As usual we have four groups, one member of each club giving a total of nine, and the Top 4 qualify for the Knock-Out stage flown cross channel. We will update the league each week.
