SOUTH DOWN FEDERATION with Brendan McLoughlin

Brown back to his best

The East Down Combine pigeons were in Tullamore for their second race of the 2010 season. Once gain the weather conditions were favourable and after the early morning mist had cleared the birds were liberated in near perfect conditions in a west northwesterly wind.

Returns were very good on the day and all fanciers enjoyed a good race. Following on from a very successful start for South Down Federation members last week they once again managed to take some excellent Open and section positions.

The winner of the South Down Fed this week is Annsborough’s Patrick Brown who also takes an excellent 1st section, and 4th Open. Patrick has another bird in the result at 3rd Fed, 3rd section, 6th Open. Both pigeons are from Annalong’s K Rooney & Son, who were also responsible for the two pigeons Patrick had in the Fed result last week. This has been another superb start to the season for Patrick and Geraldine and I’m sure they will be able to add to it.

The sire of the winning pigeon this week is the Lindelauf cock that won the section from Pilmore Beach in 2008. The dam is a Busschaert, which has bred a lot of prizewinners for the Rooney partnership. The sire of Patrick’s second pigeon is a Janssen whose sire won the Leeds Amalgamation twice from 500 miles, while the dam is a Van Wildermeersch that is the dam of an Open winner for the Rooneys.

Annsborough’s D Croskery & Son are 2nd Fed, 2nd section, 5th Open this week for another good result for them. The pigeon timed here is a De Klak yearling cock that picked up a few positions as a young bird when it was a steady racer.

Noel Maguire Annsborough, racing with just a team of six old birds is 4th Fed, 5th section, 8th Open and this is a tremendous result for the small team man. Noel’s pigeon is a yearling hen from his Robert McMeekin, Kingsmoss stock and these birds have done particularly well for Noel.

Annsborough’s R J Keown gets his season under way with two birds in the fed result. The first of these is 5th Fed, 6th section and 9th Open. RJ’s second pigeon is 10th Fed. The pigeon at 5th Fed is a yearling hen, which is ¾ Roland Janssen x Steenhaut. The second pigeon is a Joop Jongue x Steenhaut with the dam being a daughter of ‘Oscar’.

Newcastle’s E & A Rogan have two good birds in the result at 6th and 7th Fed, 13th and 15th section and 17th section, 28th and 32nd Open. Eddie and Aidie topped the Combine last year from Bude and are determined to maintain that form. Their first bird is two-year-old Janssen hen that wasn’t raced last year. Their second bird is yearling cock and is a son of their first pigeon with the sire being a VandenBosche. This yearling cock was 1st club the previous week from Mullingar.

R McDowell & Son Annsborough are 8th Fed, 16th section, 33rd Open this week to get their season under way. The pigeon timed here is a yearling cock with the sire coming from Billy Lecky off stock obtained from John Patterson and J Cromie & Son. The dam is a Fletcher Busschaert.

The result is completed by Annsborough’s Declan Blaney who takes 9th Fed, 18th section, 36th Open. This is a great start to the season for Deckie who just started back in pigeons last year. He timed a two-year-old hen that is a full sister of D Croskery & Son’s Skibbereen Classic winner in 2008. This pigeon was unraced as a young bird and as a yearling.
