The INFC Triple Crown –
The INFC Patron Ronnie Johnston has a long history on the many awards competed for each season and recently penned a little bit on one of the new ones that has been getting some attention since it first came around. He said “The Triple Crown Diploma is in my opinion one of the hardest to win at National level”. The criteria to win this coveted award, the pigeon has to be an Open prize-winner over three races. Starting with Penzance Young Bird Nat, followed by the Sennen Cove Yearling Nat and finally the Kings Cup from France. Three races in successive seasons and all from across the water. The winning pigeon would have earner the title of “Champion”. The INFC Triple Crown Diploma was first competed for in the 2009 season and there were two winners. Tommy McClean of Annaghmore and J McLoughlin & Son of Blanchardstown. We may have had three winners but let me explain. Glen Buckley and son Jonathan of Annaghmore had a Blue hen which won 134th Open YB Nat in 2008, 29th Open Yearling Nat in 2009 and a few weeks later was sent back to the Vannes Kings Cup winning a super 2nd Open – but alas no Triple Crown Diploma. The criteria for the new award had been set and passed through an AGM it would be over three successive seasons. Glen was disappointed but told me the hen would go back in 2010 and hopefully win her Triple Crown. I am thrilled to report that is exactly what he did and the Blue hen was clocked on the second morning to make the Open prizes and win the Triple Crown Diploma. The G Buckley & Sons loft have an amazing record from the Kings Cup, 2006 – 8th Open INFC, 2007/08 – no race, 2009 – 2nd Open INFC, 2010 – 7th Open INFC. We now have it confirmed that Ron Williamson from Bondhill and Willie Neill of Annaghmore have also won the Triple Crown Diploma and Brendan McLoughlin has penned me some details of all three winners.
Triple Crown Diploma winners 2010
G Buckley & Son, Annaghmore
Young Bird National 2008 - 134th Open
Yearling national 2009 – 29th Open
King’s Cup 2010 – 201st Open.
What a magnificent National record this bird has. Added to the above three results she was also 2nd Open in the King’s Cup last year as a yearling but was denied the Triple Crown on that occasion as a bird has to be timed in three successive seasons to qualify for the award. This was Glen and John’s fourth bird home in the King’s Cup this year and was timed at 7.30am on the second day. It’s bred down from all their own stock and contains Soontjens, Verheye and Janssen lines.
Ron Williamson, Bondhill
Young Bird National 2008 – 32nd Open
Yearling National 2009 - 194th Open
King’s Cup 2010 – 72nd Open
This two-year-old Pencil Pied hen was raced through to Bude and sent to the King’s Cup this year sitting 14 days on eggs. Her breeding is top drawer, with the sire being a direct daughter of ‘Lady Helen’, Ron’s IHFC Friendship National winner. The sire is a son of “Champion Five times a Lady’, his Gold Medal winner for four times in the prizes in the King’s Cup.
G W Neill, Annaghmore
Young Bird National 2008– 89th Open
Yearling National 2009 – 62nd Open
Kings Cup 2010 – 53rd Open
Willie’s Triple Crown winner, ‘Queen of the Silver Dollar’ is another Blue bar hen. The sire is bred off a pigeon from John Greenaway, Bondhill and is from his ‘Iron Lady’ pigeons. The dam is a Van Loon from Norrie Sharpe. The pigeon that was 11th Open in the Young Bird National in 2008 is a full sister of the mother of ‘Queen of the Silver Dollar’. The pigeons that were 3rd Open in the Young Bird National last year and the pigeon that was 3rd Open in the Yearling National are also from the same lines.
Liberation was delayed for the second race of the young bird season, birds were finally released at 2.30pm in a helping south west wind. Farming Life - Wednesday 28/07/10
The News Letter, now in its fourth century of continuous publication, has come a long way since it first saw the light of day in 1737. On a visit to Northern Ireland, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth described the longevity of the newspaper as "an achievement in which the people of Northern Ireland can take great pride". Pigeon News is featured in the Farming Life supplement each Wednesday.
