When going to press last week the details for the Talbenny race were not available and did not meet copy deadlines, I do have the result at hand now and can confirm that Mervyn Shaw of Armagh was indeed 1st Sect E and 1st Open NIPA 1042/16,560 recording velocity 1076. Some parts of the country had good returns but most suffered heavy losses and only a small number of birds made it into Derry City. The NIPA delayed the liberation until 12.30pm which turned out too late for a long fly even birds racing in Ireland were slow returning to home lofts including Derry City from Tullamore where the winners were doing 800ypm. As it turned out the race was no better than the much earlier liberation by the East Down Combine.

Both Press Officers have their own websites and pigeonnetwork.com has a result board for every club in Ireland giving them the opportunity to supply and place race information and also include a photo, news supplied here and on other sites is used for the weekly report. No particular people are picked out to be covered, the column is made up from news supplied and available for all members. Race winner Mervyn Shaw was in contact reporting a good race for his loft, only nine birds sent, 3 in 15 minutes and 6 home in 22 minutes. I have asked for info on the NIPA Open winner and a photo. As we go to press again we don’t have an early report, the Talbenny race was followed by the Yearling Nat from Sennen Cove with only 450 birds recorded on the day and this weekend another tough race from Bude with the best reported bird timed by Ron Williamson of Bondhill. He was flying just short of six hours recording velocity 1296 for the 263 miles.

At the weekend the NIPA realesed in both Bude and Fermoy for the 5 Bird Championship, the Bude liberation was at the early time of 7.45am and included all Irish organizations including Ulster Federation, East Coast Fed (Dublin) and the East Down Combine. Fermoy release was at 9.00am in a Lt NW wind and it turned out an excellent event, Bude was a lot more difficult and the cross channel programme has been hard so far, Penzance is due this weekend and then we go to France for the OB Nat and the Kings Cup from Plaudren/Vannes.
The best bird in the Coleraine Triangle was timed by G Donaghy Son & Grandson who had 1st Windsor Social (1187), followed by the top two in the Coleraine Premier Diamond Bros and Paul O’Connor and then Darren Tosh who had 1st Coleraine & County Derry (1150). It’s getting harder now at the distance, Penzance is this weekend.

A great result for Noel, he tells me the last time he sent to Bude was 1994, and he also topped the Combine. France here we come.
After two testing races the numbers were reduced for the Bude event, in Mid Antrim 80 members sent 757 birds, released at 7.45am the NIPA with Ulster Fed, East Coast Fed (Dublin) and East Down Combine. At the home end we had sunshine and some very heavy showers in the late afternoon. The early bird was timed in Cullybackey at The Rock made famous for long distance racing by the Reid Bros and now in the capable hands of young Harry McCloy. His yearling Red cock was timed at 2.32pm flying 292 miles to record velocity 1265, 1st Club, 1st Mid Antrim Combine and favourite for 1st Sect B. In Cullybackey Russell Bros were next best, former NI Fanciers of the Year followed by J & J Greer former Kings Cup winners. Tom McAlonan had the winner in Ballymena & Dist (1213), another loft that looks forward to the longer races followed by W & J Smyth who are having another top season timing two early birds. Houston Bros were 1st Randalstown (1213), George Price 1st Harryville (1196), McFall & McManus 1st New Antrim Amal (1195), J & N Simpson 1st Broughshane (1194) and Milliken & Barkley 1st Rasharkin & Dist (1192), they topped the Combine & Sect B from Talbenny.
The Champions League had a super Semi-Final with Danny Dixon a former winner v S Millar and Alan Darragh v Paddy McManus of Ahoghill who has had a fantastic old bird season to date. Result: D Dixon 1165, S Millar 1178, P McManus 1171, A Darragh 1075. That makes the Champions League Final from Penzance this weekend Simon Millar (Randalstown) v Young McManus & Sons (Ahoghill). What a contest this should be, good luck to both lofts who have won almost 20 races between them.
