Moving into the fifth week of the O/Bird season we had a bit of a mixed bag, with the NIPA destined for Clonmel for the second week deciding late on Thursday evening after much discussion that they would put race marking back one night and race mark at the usual time on Saturday evening for a possible liberation on Sunday with Monday looking the best day out of the three. The other two Northern Ireland based organizations namely the East Down Combine and the Ulster Federation went on a head with their ring markings as normal with convoys destined for Mallow and Thurles respectively. With this week nearing the end of the Inland programme and with exceptional racing and returns to date, the NIPA are organizing an additional inland official race to be flown next Saturday, the race point will be Clonmel and the pigeons will be picked up at NIPA Centre’s on Friday evening for a planned liberation also on Saturday. This race is an extra one and will be flown the same day as the Rosscarbery Inland National of course weather permitting. Please remember it is a 20 Bird Limit for Rosscarbery.
The NIPA race marked as announced on Saturday evening and with some transporters arriving at Clubs slightly earlier than usual some might consider that birdage would be down, I would think it was more due to the fact that Tea Time traffic is less on a Saturday than a Friday, thus the fleet getting through the country more swiftly. Sunday morning dawned to a typical summer’s morning, solid Blue sky and blinding Sunshine, a little cold but what a morning and when news filtered through that these conditions were mirrored just not at the race point in Clonmel but all over the route, the strings were cut and the large convoy liberated at 9.00am in a Lt South Westerly wind with a very good race expected by the Secretary Fred Russell and a good race they had with the leading pigeons just over the 1400 yards per minute, just what the majority wanted after a few easy racing days recently.
