Youngsters start their season at speed
The East Down Combine’s 2016 Young Bird programme got underway on July 16th with the opening race from Navan and with a West wind a fast race was on the cards . Liberated at 10am the leading birds made easy work of this opener with Race Controller Doley Croskery and his dad Dominic having the top two in the Open with the winning velocity just ½ ypm short of the 1800 mark.
It was then out to the East Coast for the next 25 birds in the open to the Portavogie and Cloughey clubs with a number of fanciers from both clubs featuring in the results and this meant that early times were in the Combine’s East section .
In the West section it was Crossgar , Newtownbreda and Ballylesson clubs taking the top places with Crossgar’s Alex & Anne Cheevers having the top three in Section and Club followed by four to the Newtownbreda partnership of B Hogg & sons.
In each of 8 of the 18 clubs competing in the Combine the top three places were won in each case by one loft and as the results show the birds were returning with little separating them . The top open and section placings were :

East Down2bird News
Last article I mentioned that from St.Malo Old Bird Derby in the 2 bird club only one bird was recorded and that was to Ballywalter’s Sam Regan some details on this blue cheq hen are ; Breeding -sire one of Sam’s old Cattrysse family and the dam from a Graham Baker hen via Sam’s very good friend David Jones of Llandudno in North Wales.
Prior to the St. Malo race this hen was timed on the day in the Sennen Cove yearling national 2016 flying 308 miles in 11 hours and 16 minutes into a head wind across the Irish sea and just missing out on making the prizes. Sam would like to take this opportunity to thank D.L. and Eirleys for some excellent pigeons over the many years of their friendship.

This week it is the 2nd race from Navan .
