Fantastic National Race for NIPA
The first NIPA National event of 2009 was flown from Rosscarbery on Sunday 24th of May following a two day hold-over with excellent success with many of the leading pigeons spread right across the country. With a lot of preparation work put in by the Committee prior to the postponement of the race last weekend, the Committee looked at the weather patterns well in advance of this weekend and decided to organise the lifting of the entries from the NIPA Marking Centres around two hours earlier than normal on Thursday to allow enough time for the Transporters to be in Rosscarbery with the possibility of a race on Friday looking likely when making their arrangements known on Tuesday evening.
As Friday dawned the patches of rain in different parts of the country showed no sign of clearing and it was decided to hold the pigeons over and similarly Saturday started wet for many but all the signs pointed to the band of rain and low lying cloud clearing around Lunch-Time once again for the second day in succession this didnt happen quick enough and with not enough day-light hours left taking into consideration the furthest flying members in the NIPA flying into the City of Derry it was decided to hold over once again with Sunday looking glorious from Dawn.
The Ulster Federation where only a few miles away in Skibbereen on Saturday for their first Classic race of 2009 and they also opted to hold-over. Organisations that did liberate included the East Down Combine in Mallow going at 2.15pm in a West Wind, the East Coast Federation in Rosscarbery liberating at 2.00pm in a S/West Wind and the Irish South Road Federation in Thurles liberated at 2.00pm.
The ISRF also had pigeons in Talbenny, South Wales and decided to hold these pigeons on Saturday as did the NIPA with their second convoy of pigeons in Fermoy, I must also add that the support for this race from Fermoy was superb with four full transporters heading to the liberation site. Solid sunshine was the order of the day on Sunday morning and at 8.45am in a South/South Westerly wind at a speed of 7 10 miles per hour at the race point the NIPA Convoy in Fermoy were liberated. Fifteen minutes later the NIPA National pigeons were liberated in Rosscarbery at 9.00am in the same conditions as the Fermoy birds (Perfect) the wind seemed to pick up as the morning wore on and more Southerly breeze was the order of the day with gusts up to 20 miles per hour in some areas.
Prior to this on Sunday morning the Ulster Federation Classic pigeons were liberated in Skibbereen at 7.30am in a light south westerly wind and first out of the blocks where the Munster Federation in Dungannon who liberated at 7.00am. The Wexford fanciers also had a convoy of pigeons which were liberated in Coosktown on Sunday and finally the ISRF enjoyed their first cross channel event of the season with a race from Talbenny in South Wales liberating at 10.15am. So a very busy weekend all round for the fanciers in Ireland and with the vast majority of liberations on Sunday a near impossible task for us to make the RP Deadline of 9am on a Monday morning and the BHW on Monday afternoon, but as always we do our best.
Another bit of good news over the weekend was the NIPA linking up with Randox Laboratories in Crumlin, Co.Antrim, this company which have operations all over the world will take care of all the drug testing to be carried out by the NIPA this year, these will include both swabs of the throat and feather testing for banned substances.
