Jimmy Hanson from the Coleraine Premier, top prize-winner last year did not wait long to record another winner this time in the second race of the old bird season at Gowran Park. This hen is bred off his No 1 pair of Lambrecht’s which are themselves responsible for multiple section winners and top NIPA Open positions. The hen itself is a double winner herself she has won before. She is also a direct grand-daughter of Danny Dixon’s “Champion Heartbreaker”. The winner was timed at 13.32hrs flying 175 miles to record velocity 1361. He wins 1st Club, 1st Coleraine Triangle, 1st Sect A & 130th Open NIPA. Training is done locally, must be getting something right.

Best in the Section was Ronnie Witherow from Limavady recording velocity 1298, best in the City of Derry was Rory Gallagher of Derry & District doing 1226. It is my sad duty to inform local fanciers of the sudden and untimely death of Jimmy Boyle, a member of the Maiden City who passed away this morning. Jimmy loved his pigeons and enjoyed the craic with his club mates, never taking his results seriously as long as he got his birds home. A hard worker for the club, he was always available no matter what the task. Our condolences to his partner, his sons and daughters, and to his mother and family. Rest in peace Jimmy, gone far too young. Pat McLaughlin Secretary.

Obituary – I had the news that another of the Old Hands had passed away recently Bertie Goudy was an ace racer in his time winning many races and usually always in the prizes. He was long time Secretary in Muckamore HPS and also looked after the old Antrim Combine which at the time involved all the Antrim Clubs, Muckamore and Crumlin & District. He lived just behind the Muckamore HPS Clubrooms which was very handy serving the local fancy for many years as Centre Manager both for the NIPA and Irish Nat FC. His greatest success was winning the Blue Riband Kings Cup in 1964 from Nantes. His Blue Cheq hen was timed on the day at 8.25pm some 14 hours and 40 minutes on the wing at 556 miles to record velocity 1111 winning cash of £210. Before going to Nantes the hen had three races in Ireland plus Haverfordwest (206 miles), in previous seasons she had flown Okehampton twice (289 miles) and Penzance (317 miles). My records are not clear but I believe they won a race from Beauvais in 1970. Indeed they had many prizes out of France, over many years. Bertie Goudy lived to the advanced age of 87 years and although not active in the sport in recent times was always interested in the results. He died peacefully at Antrim Area Hospital, late of Alexandra Park, Muckamore. He is survived by his wife Florence, son Bobbi and beloved grandsons Ethan and Reuben. A Service of Thanksgiving for his life was held in Muckamore Presbyterian Church and he was laid to rest at Belmont Cemetery in Antrim. Another big star Jackie Hunter who raced with Glenavy & District had not raced for a number of years but when he was racing scored many top results, top highlight being 1st Open INFC Sennen Cove Yearling Nat back in 1991, I remember covering that at the time, cash winnings were £2,930. He was always at the shows and sales and made many trips to Belgium with the late Stevie Cairns from Gilford. Jackie died peacefully at his own home in Ballinderry and is survived by wife Rosemary and daughters Carolyn and Laura as well as grandchildren James and Daniel, Joshua, Bethany and Eden. A Service of Thanksgiving for Jackie’s life was held in Ballinderry Parish Church before burial at Middle Church Churchyard.
