Post by willie reynolds »

Ballymoney & Coleraine -

The two big clubs north of Mid Antrim are Ballymoney HPS who have most members competing in Sect B while further north we have the big Coleraine Premier HPS where most members compete in Sect A. Prizes were well shared in Coleraine Premier HPS and the major result was D Coyle & Son topping the NIPA in the old bird Roscrea. In Ballymoney the prizes in the old birds well were shared although in the young birds Danny Dixon dominated winning 1st & 2nd Club in most events including the Nationals from Talbenny and Skibbereen. The big distance results were for Andy Wilson having the only bird in the St Malo OB Nat recording velocity 638 and finishing 1st Blub, 5th Sect B & 30th Open NIPA 373/1351. Re: Ballymoney & Coleraine Season 2019 -

Post by willie reynolds »

Ballymoney Update – I recently covered the results of Ballymoney HPS listing the wins in the NIPA season of 2019, although I did miss looking at the INFC season other than the Kings Cup when James Walker timed two excellent birds, one on the day at 523 miles. Ballymoney are one of very few clubs that produce a result for the entire season races and I do my best to feature as many as possible as most already know. Firstly I have some very sad news to report the passing of Mrs Gloria McMullan the wife of long time Secretary Derek McMullan at the family home in Dervock. She had been in ill health for a while and we extend condolences to the family circle at this very sad time. Donations in lieu of flowers if desired to Macmillan Cancer Support on line at mcmullanfunerals.com or by post to James McMullan & Son, 22 High Street, Ballymoney, BT53 6AQ.

The Irish Nat season started as usual with Skibbereen old birds 6/53 and Danny Dixon top four with winning velocity 1257. The well supported Yearling Nat was next Sennen Cove 13/98 and winning the club for the second time former National winners J McDowell & Sons velocity 1340. The Grand Nat Kings Cup flown from Saint Allouestre 8/47 I have already covered James Walker 1st & 2nd with a day arrival at 9.25pm recording velocity 995 and winning the Robin Duddy Distance Trophy at the INFC. The Friendship National was again flown from Lamballe 6/27 and W & L McCaw follow up the 1st, 2nd and 3rd Club of 2018 timing their second bird again in 2019 only bird in club to win 1st Club, 32nd North Section & 45th Open INFC Lamballe and a Merit Award.

In the young birds Skibbereen was flown first Danny Dixon having a fantastic young bird season had won all races to date and in this one had the top six birds with the winner recording velocity 1597. One of the top results of the year was in the final Grand Nat from Penzance 4/34 the Dixon loft put up a big result but was pipped at the post by D & H Stuart who are very consistent racers and win every year, in Ballymoney HPS they loft the cup for the loft with the highest position won over the year, well done Darwin.

4th North Section, 5th Open D & H Stuart, Ballymoney HPS, vel 1324 flying 346 miles, winning £130
D & H Stuart are very consistent racers in the big Ballymoney HPS, with the quality of the membership it’s hard to lift the Red Card. The loft timed a very early bird into their lofts in Dervock at 15.40hrs and just finished part of a yard behind M/M McNeilly in the Muckamore Centre. The pigeon timed is a Cheq Pied hen and it had 4 races down Ireland and was the lofts first bird clocked from Talbenny on the Monday winning 4th Club, previous best performance in this race was 3rd Open in 2013. Sire is Van Wildermeersch x Soontjen. Dam is Soontjen and is a half-sister of the lofts 2nd Open Bude in the NIPA. Feeding is Versele Laga and Beattie’s.

6th North Section, 7th Open Danny Dixon, Ballymoney HPS, vel 1309 flying 339 miles, winning 994
Triple National winner Danny Dixon of Rasharkin. This is a fancier who needs no introduction to the fancy, always thereabouts in the major races and has amassed many top ten finishes in derby and national events including 3 x 1st Open National wins. The first of these was the INFC Skibbereen YB National in 1998 followed by a NIPA Rosscarbery YB National in 2006 and then the INFC Penzance YB National in 2010. Other big results include 2nd Open NIPA Old Bird Derby from St. Malo and 2nd Open NIPA Penzance OB Classic. Danny had a fantastic Penzance race timing 7 of his 14 entries in just half an hour. Positions taken were 7th, 14th, 35th, 41st, 42nd, 43rd and 59th Open. The first bird timed at 15:36 hrs was a blue hen that had been slipped a youngster before basketing. The sire of this hen is Danny's ace stock bird "Belgie Cock" This Wildemeersch cock is a great grandson of the famous "De Beer" He is sire of Ryan Barr's North Coast Classic winner, G/Sire of D Coyles Section A Talbenny YB National and G/Sire of J McDowell & Sons of Ballymoney NIPA Talbenny YB National winner. The dam of the 7th Open hen was purchased at a sale last year for Martin Graham of Ballymena and is a daughter of "The Big Hen" Danny's second bird timed at 15.38hrs was a blue chequer cock, breeding is De Rauw-Sablon x Joss Josson. Thanks to PO Mervyn Eagleson for this detailed report.
