Kells Prize Night & Moot
Kells & Dist broke with tradition and arranged the presentation of awards in conjunction with their Moot & Quiz which was held at the plush Dunsilly Hotel in Antrim. Chairman Brian Swann welcomed the members and guests including the local scribe Homer. He thanked Alan Shanks who arranged the night and all the members who assisted in the running of the club over the entire season. That included a fantastic race season and not forgetting the winter show series which is always well supported along with the annual Boxing Day Show in the local clubrooms. He thanked Secretary Mervyn Gregg for the admin and Alan Shanks who had taken over as Treasurer. Also George McDowell for clocks, Alan Barkley for the shows, Jeff Surgenor for crates, John Hill for transport, Mrs Herron for rings and Marcus Morrow for pools. He also thanked Tommy Millar of the Sizzlers Fish & Chip Show in Kells for presenting a cup to be won by the winner of the very successful 2 Bird Club Scott & Clements. Jeff Surgenor had a season to remember winning 12 x 1sts at club level and 21 cups and trophies. The club pay-out exceeded £1,100 and leading lofts were: Surgenor Bros, Scott & Clements, Harry Boyd, George McDowell, T & M Morrow, B Swann & Son, A Barkley & Son, McFarlane & Agnew, Henry Turkington and Bill McClure.
Surgenor Bros won – Highest Prize-winner, YB Average, OB Average, Combined Average, R Service Cup 1st & 2nd OB & YB Races, Campbell Cup 1st Talbenny, Cross Channel Cup, J McGall Cup all Channel Races, OB Inland Derby, Ave Talbenny (1) & (2), Buffs Cup best Ave all Derby Races, YB Knock-Out Cup, YB Points Cup, YB Cross Channel Derby, YB Inland Derby, R Logan Cup, Nan McFarlane Memorial Cup, J Wright Cup, Adair Cup Ave 2 x YB Derbies, Young Bird of the Year, T Morrow Memorial Trophy (League).
Harry Boyd won – M Smyth Cup Ave 1st & 2nd OB Races, OB Knock-Out Cup, McKitterick Cup, Old Bird Nat Cup, D Graham Memorial Cup Highest INFC Position, T Shanks Memorial Cup Old Bird of the Year. William McClure won – OB St Malo National, Spar Trophy Best Ave OB Nat NIPA & INFC. Henry Turkington won – Penzance Cup, C Duncan Cup Lowest winning velocity. A Barkley & Son won – Bude Cup. G McDowell won OB Inland Average Cup. Scott & Clements won – H Smyth Cup Best Ave second two OB Races, Transporter Cup 2nd Talbenny, Sizzlers 2 Bird Trophy.
In Mid Antrim Combine the Kells & Dist club won the Young Bird Points Ave Shield and Surgenor Bros the Young Bird Average Cup. Race winners included in the old birds Scott & Clements 1st Combine Clonmel (1) 125/2,834 doing vel 1532 and George McDowell 1st Combine Rosscarbery Yearling Hen Nat 33/101 doing vel 1622. At the start of the young bird season the local club won three on the trot, Surgenor Bros 1st Combine Tullamore (1) 76/1,725 doing vel 1701, Scott & Clements 1st Combine Tullamore (2) 108/3,007 doing vel 1570 and Surgenor Bros 1st Combine Roscrea 110/3,141 doing vel 1515. Surgenor Bros completed the season by winning for the third time at Fermoy 1st Combine 99/2,484 doing vel 1833. Guests at the Moot & Quiz included the INFC Patron Ronnie Johnston and he made a special presentation to long time fancier Bill McClure who won the Hall of Fame Diploma.
The MAC Champions League was won by Martin Graham for Ballymena & District, he defeated Scott & Clements of Kells in the final flown from Penzance. Both had qualified the week previous when the semi-final matches at Bude were M Graham v A McBride and Scott & Clements v W & J Smyth. Another fantastic competition and thanks again to James Harris for the admin.
INFC President Syd Collins chaired the panel that included Peter Martin from Ulster Federation, Roy Irwin from East Down Combine and former Kings Cup winners Anthony McDonnell (Coleraine) and Alan Darragh (Cullybackey). Fanciers travelled from far and wide and the club can be well pleased with this new event which they hope to have again, many thanks to Alan Shanks who made all the arrangements assisted by the hard working Secretary Mervyn Gregg.
