The Dundonald club held a very successful 3 bird Challenge from the Skibbereen Classic on 14 May. They were pleased to receive entries from right across the East Down Combine and are hoping to run a similar challenge from the Young Bird Derby.
The winners of the Challenge were Annsborough’s G & P Brown who took the first two prizes with the two birds that were 1st and 2nd Open. R Moore & Son Bangor were third in the Challenge with the pigeon that was 6th Open for them, which just shows the strength of the competition in the race. Let’s have a look at the three prizewinners.
G & P Brown IHU 10 N 04581 This is the bird known as Geraldine’s Delight that was 1st North section 41st Open in theYoung Bird National from Skibbereen last year. This year this yearling cock was 1st club, 12th section, 12th open Tullamore.
The parents of this pigeon are on loan from Annalong’s K Rooney & Son, and Patrick asked me to record his thanks again to Kevin and Kristopher for all the help they have given him over the past few years.
The sire of the pigeon timed here won an East Down Combine Open from Durrow in 2003 and has bred quite a few winners for Kevin and Kristopher. The breeding is Staf Van Reet from Brownlee, Ward & Nee. The dam is a Janssen from a pair bought at McCormack and Schofield’s clearance sale in Blackpool in 2006. The Janssen pair are ‘Mr Mack’ and ‘Amazing Grace’ and what a superb pedigree they have, having bred numerous winners for McCormack and Schofield including ‘Double 500’ winner of 1st City of Leeds Fed two years in a row from 500 miles. They have also bred many prizewinners for the Rooneys at Club, Fed and Combine level.
2. G & P Brown IHU 09 N 10217
This is another super racer that was 1st Club, 1st South Down Fed, 1st section, 4th Open from Mount Charles two weeks previously winning around £600 in pools DTW in both the Fed and club. This bird was also 3rd club, 4th South Down Fed, 9th section, 13th Open from the first Mount Charles and had been 3rd club the previous week from Tullamore. This two-year-old cock had some very impressive results last year, when it was 1st South Down Fed, 1st section, 4th Open Tullamore and 2nd South Down Fed, 2nd section, 5th Open Talbenny also winning the 3 Bird Channel Championship.
The sire of this pigeon is a Lindelauf cock that won the section from Pilmore Beach in 2008. The dam is a Busschaert, which has bred a lot of prizewinners for K Rooney & Son.
3. R Moore & Son IHU09N 26801
This is one of Reggie and David’s best racing cocks. He was Old Bird of the Year last year in Bangor R.P.C. He was unraced as a young bird when he was only trained. The Skibbereen Old Bird Classic was his 3rd race of 2011 racing roundabout . His breeding is Verheyen/Huybreght. His sire ‘Dakota 67’ is their best breeding, son of their No 1 pair. In fact he has bred the first pigeon home to the loft in 3 out of 6 races this year, winning 1st, 1st, and 3rd. The Dam of 26801 was a top-racing hen winning many positions. She was a direct daughter of their East Down Combine winner from the Young Bird Derby when paired to another East Down Combine winner. Brendan McLoughlin PO.
