The opening race of the old bird season was flown from Tullamore in Co Offaly on Saturday 9th April, the NIPA birds were released at 12.30pm in a SE wind. Returns were good enough but a lot of birds came back, the best positions and velocities were recorded in the top end of the country. What a start it was for the re-formed Foyle Valley Combine consisting of all members of the clubs in Derry City and Strabane. They had a result to remember with local lofts filling a lot of the top places in the NIPA and that included the 1st Open winner Danny Farrell of Strabane doing velocity 1831. We also had Anthony McCrudden having three birds placed in the first race for the newly formed Derry & District, Sean Gallagher & Son (Londonderry) and Dermot Friel (Maiden City) had two birds each.

In the same club J L Madden was best reported in the NIPA Sect A doing velocity 1691, others well placed included A & R McAuley who had 1st Ballymoney (1689) with a Van de Brande and Terence McCrudden 1st Coleraine & County Derry (1670).

Harold Cubitt had the top place on velocity 1691, wonder had the special training anything to do with this? He just beat club-mate William McFetridge by a decimal point, how close can u get? And Steele & McNeill were well placed with two birds. Paddy McManus was next best having the top four places in Ahoghill and Harry McCloy was 1st Cullybackey ahead of two birds for Alan Darragh. Coleraine Triangle - Report from Bannsider
Last Saturday 9th April the birds were in Tullamore County Offaly for the first of the old birds races. With a strong south east wind the top end of the country would dominate the Section and Open positions racing with the NIPA. News filtered through that the strings were cut and the birds were in the sky at 12.30pm. A fast race was expected with the winners expected to do 60mph in the helping winds.
The best local bird and provisional Section B leader looks like going to the Bushmills loft of Kenny Glass of the Windsor Social doing well over 1700ypm and a great start to the old bird season. Kenny has won the section for the further flying lofts in Section B from Tullamore like last season when the loft of Danny Dixon done the same. Kenny not only wins the club and provisional section win but also fancied this yearling cock on winning club pools. The breeding of this winner is Harry Hearn crossed with Jim Gibbon Bloodlines.
What a brilliant card Jimmy Hanson of the Coleraine Premier had taking the first five places in the club and taking very good section B positions. Jimmy timed one of his good hens that had previously won the Rosscarbery YB National, being one of his Wildy family. Must congratulate Danny Dixon on his predictions that Jimmy would be the loft to beat on Saturday. I’d say Danny will know doubt be onto jimmy looking for a tip to get off the mark for the season.
Now onto a loft that needs know introduction and that is the loft of none other than Leslie "The Kingpin" Madden with a cracking race team performance with his crack team of lightening fast Lambrects. Leslie looks like being the winner of another 1st section win racing within Section A. With a top velocity of 1691 this looks good enough for top honours. This loft will be hard to beat if he gets the drive again to put the work into the birds and know doubt with Mr Hanson doing his usual winding The Kingpin will give him his fill of it. Congrates Les on a top perfomance. Lynne says she cant wait for this special pair of Lambrects you have in the nest for her.
Over in the County Derry the winner here is none other that Terrence McCrudden with a velocity of 1670 and 1646 for a good 1-2 with the winner being one of his Marrita Vink pigeons sourced at great expense. This 2yr old cock was racing to eggs and was a previous winner of 30th open Fermoy last year as a yearling.
In the big Ballymoney club it was a good start to the season for the loft of A& R McAuley with a winning velocity of 1689ypm for what looks like 2nd section A. Andy seems to be making this race point his own as last year he won the club in this race also. This years winner was a yearling mealy hen.

Over in Limavady it was a win for the loft of Ronnie Witherow with a velocity of 1609ypm for this Section A west Fancier of the Year 2010.
In closing id like to congratulate my good mate the flying postman Karl Murphy on winning the Big strong Coalisland & District with one of his super family of Soontens that have over 15x1st Section wins to their credit this is a great start to back to back section fancier of the year 2009 and 2010 and will be one of the dominant lofts to watch for as the season progresses. Good to see Stevie Marshall getting his act together in winning Cookstown Social, no doubt the smugger will be looking to get a win shortly to back up all of his talking in the closed season. Well that’s it for now a few photos will be updated shortly. Enjoy your racing, Bannsider.
