After four very successful races with 30,000 birds competing the NIPA hit a lot of problems racing last weekend from Fermoy in Co Cork, one of the best liberation sites in Ireland. The weather conditions were difficult all week and that was to run through the weekend, in the circumstances it’s hard to know just what to do. As it turned out the race was far from satisfactory and that will effect the rest of the season. Reports from the liberation site said the birds were slow to clear, only around half had returned by tea-time when clocks were struck off. The longer flying lofts have been doing well, last week with over 1,000 birds competing J Hutchinson & Son (Ballymoney) topped Sect B from Clonmel and was well placed in the NIPA. This weekend with just under 1,000 birds the Ballymoney winner was Danny Laverty and again the club take 1st Sect B on velocity 1420. Up the road in Coleraine Premier the Nevin Bros are expected to top the NIPA doing velocity 1422, and 1st Sect A.

The top loft this week from the County Derry club is the loft of Terence McCrudden with one of his super van loon family. Terence timed a yearling widowhood hen on a velocity of 1302ypm, bred out of one of his best retired racers. The father to the winning hen was a great racer from the channel with numerous open and section positions to his name. He is also the gsire to last years rpra award winner. It was only a matter of time before his pigeons came to the fore once they start getting the miles and head wind.Wait till he gets his A Team ready! Next up and winning the Premier for the second time this season is A McDonnell with one of his widowhood pigeons on 1299ypm coming through premier lofts of van mearkerk lines. The wee man must have fancied the winner as it was pooled and dtw. Staying with the Premier and taking second club is the formidable loft of Diamond Brothers on a velocity of 1297 followed in third by Leslie Madden with another one of his Lambrect widowhood cocks.

Saturday 30th April it was a trip to Tipp for the local lofts racing from Clonmel an average distance of 196 miles. With glourious sunshine the birds only worry was the east wind.
