After two difficult races from Talbenny we had a poor entry of under 4,500 birds in Bude for the third cross channel event, birds were race marked a day later than usual and the race was flown on Sunday 17th June with liberation at 9.25am in a Lt SW wind. It turned out a fantastic success for the Bondhill Ace flyer Ron Williamson, three birds arrived together to take 1st, 2nd & 3rd Open NIPA recording velocity 1404.

Best in Mid Antrim Jimmy Rock from Harryville timed the best bird locally and he also scored 1st & 2nd in the club from Fermoy 5 Bird flown the same day. From Bude he timed a yearling Blue cock at 15.50hrs recording velocity 1319 for the 288 miles. Hugh Boyd had the top three birds in the Randalstown HPS, a super result and takes the runner-up place in the MAC doing velocity 1317. In the recent INFC Yearling Nat Hugh bred the bird for Anthony McNeill that was best bird in the Muckamore Centre, a great prize and 1st MAC.

Jimmy Rock is getting geared up for the longer races, this winner was the best bloodlines from Gerald Delaney (Jacob) and club-mate Allen McBride (Van Loon). Jack Millar & Son finish 2nd & 3rd in Harryville, this loft is having a very good season and probably a record number of prize cards. Other club winners well placed included Russell Bros 1st Cullybackey (1311), Danny Dixon 1st Ballymoney (1302), J & N Simpson 1st Broughshane (1300), McFall & McManus 1st New Antrim Amal (1299), and Martin Graham 1st Ballymena & Dist (1288). J & N Simpson topped the Combine & Sect in the Fermoy race. The Champions League Final at Penzance will be between Reid Bros & McCloy (Cullybackey) v Stewart Bros (Randalstown). Race Sheets for the Young Bird season should be with the local clubs 2 weeks prior to racing. Ballymena & Dist either left in clubrooms or returned to Secretary Willie Reynolds.

We had two recent bereavements locally, Maureen Young the wife of Charlie passed away in hospital after a period of illness. A big supporter of Ahoghill Flying Club over many years the Young family are well connected, Charlie’s brothers Tom and Albert are the Chairman and Secretary of the club. Over the weekend the mother of Kells & Dist Secretary Mervyn Gregg passed away, on behalf of the local fancy sincere condolences to both family circles.

Best in the NIPA Sect B was Frank Todd who lives on the outskirts or Randalstown and races in the Muckamore HPS, if I remember last season he won both races from Bude & Penzance. He must have a team of birds for this distance, topping Sect B on velocity 1340 is a fantastic prize. The Mid Antrim winner Jimmy Rock from Harryville was next best followed by Hugh Boyd of Randalstown. Hugh had the top three birds in the Randalstown HPS, a super result and takes the runner-up place in the MAC doing velocity 1317. As the races get longer, the results get shorter it seems writes Billy Knox. Although we do have two race again this week, from Bude and the Fermoy Five Bird. At the time of writing, the Bude race seems to have been a real stinker, with only four birds into Derry and, all in the Foyle club. From the Fermoy race, again, returns were a little erratic. Some clubs have still not posted results at this time, so I can only give you what I have to hand at the minute. The results can always be updated later, if anyone wants to give me any more details.

We will go first to the Foyle club this week, were we have the only birds that have returned from that stinker of a Bude race. In first spot this week, and taking another channel win is Micky Jones, who also has another game pigeon in the result to take fourth. Second this week is a man who loves his channel racing, Raymond O Reilly, with another top channel flyer Noel Mc Grotty in third. Well done and fantastic flying in the Foyle this week. The result then looks like this, 1st and 4th Micky Jones 1103, 720, 2nd Raymond O Reilly 1101, 3rd Noel Mc Grotty 1080.

From the Fermoy race in the Foyle, Paul Maxwell clocks up another red card, with Sean Mc Grotty taking the next three positions and Jim Diamond taking fifth. The full result for Fermoy was 1st Paul Maxwell 1227, 2nd, 3rd and 4th Sean Mc Grotty 1166, 1164, 1146, and 5th Jim Diamond 1106.

Next up we have the Limavady club where one game bird made it from Bude. That bird belonged to the very consistent John Mc Cool and was doing a very good 1212 ypm. Well done to John on a super result.

From the Fermoy race, there are no surprises this week. Ronnie Witherow continues to dominate, with the same hen winning again this week. The hen I believe is a 2009 hen, and has won many first prizes to date. The ever present Willie Mc Ilmoyle is there again in second, while Ronnie fills the rest of the result. The full result looks like this then, 1st, 3rd, 4th and 5th Ronnie Witherow, 2nd Willie Mc Ilmoyle 1226.

In the Maiden City club this week, Pat Mc Laughlin continues to clock up the wins. The winner again this week, is Pat’s red cock who has already topped the Section and placed 3rd Open this year. A super pigeon and a loft in top, top form. Concannon Bros have a good race this week to take second position, with Pat in third, Coyle Bros in fourth, and Pat back in again in fifth. The full result then was 1st, 3rd and 5th Pat Mc Laughlin 1295, 1227, 1178, 2nd Concannon Bros 1227, 4th Coyle Bros 1183.

In the Derry and District this week, Joe Ebbs almost does a clean sweep of the result with four of the first five positions. Danny Canning stops the clean sweep for Joe by taking second spot. A super race for Joe this week. The full result was 1st, 3rd, 4th and 5th Joe Ebbs 1278, 1228, 1199, 2nd Danny Canning 1228.

These are the only club results to hand at the minute, although I can give you the first ten results from the Centre, which might throw some light on the other clubs from the Fermoy race. The top ten in the Centre looks like this, 1st Pat Mc Laughlin 1295, 2nd and 10th Joe Ebbs 1278, 1228, 3rd and 5th Tony Conway 1265, 1257, 4th J + D Kelly 1257, 6th Sean Gallagher + Sons 1246, 7th and 8th Glenn Quinn 1242, 1238, 9th Danny Canning 1228.

The Fermoy 5 Bird was flown on Sunday 17th June, liberation was at 11.00am in a helping Lt South Westerly wind. It turned out a big result for the Downpatrick area with Paddy Lue & Son winning 1st Open NIPA recording velocity 1535, one yard ahead of two early birds for the former Kings Cup winner Jackie Crossan.

Kevin and Kristopher Rooney 1st and 2nd Open from Fermoy

The East Down Combine weather committee decided against going to Bude for their race on Saturday 16th June writes Brendan McLoughlin. It was decided however that conditions were favourable for an inland race from either Fermoy or Mount Charles, with Fermoy being the selected race point. According to the forecast the forecast was never going to be favourable enough for a race and as a result the birds were hampered on Saturday evening for a Sunday race.

Many used the race as an opportunity to give their French candidates a good fly before the forthcoming Derby and National races while others saw it as another race. As it turned out there was a good entry of birds with 163 members sending 2,213 birds.

Sunday morning was bright and clear and the birds were released at 9.15am in a light north west wind and South Down fanciers were hopeful once again of obtaining good Combine honours and they weren’t to be disappointed with 13 Fed birds in the Open result. Pride of place goes to Annalong’s K Rooney & Son who were 1st and 2nd Open and rounded the day off well with another bird taking 5th Fed, 8th section, 8th Open. Kevin and Kristopher’s birds have shown a lot of good form in recent weeks and they have featured in both the Fed and Open results over the last few races. Their birds have put up some wonderful performances for other fanciers throughout the country and Geraldine and Patrick Brown Annsborough have achieved a lot of success at Combine level with their performances. Kevin and Kristopher will be delighted with this win in their own name, and I know that they have been putting in a big effort with Kristopher putting a few of his own ideas on motivating the birds into practice.

Their Open winner this week is off a Danny Van Dyke cock that was newly bought in last year. This bird has already produced a few winners for them and for other fanciers, in particular for G & P Brown, as mentioned above. The dam is a direct Marijke Vink hen. This yearling cock has been their most consistent racer this year and should have won a few weeks ago only for a bad trap. This pigeon is now aptly named ‘Superstar’.

The pigeon at second Open is off a Staf Van Reet cock that was ironically second Open himself, also beaten by a loft mate. The dam is a Janssen from Simon Schofield, Leeds, and she has already bred two Open winners. Scolfield’s Janssens have been their number one stock pigeons breeding many many winners. This yearling cock wasn’t raced as a young bird and has been called ‘Buster’.

Their pigeon taking 8th Open is off a Gust Jansen pigeon when paired to a daughter of McCartan & Woodsides’ ‘601’ cock, which has bred numerous winners at Open and club level. This pair has been together for a couple of years now and has bred many good winners.

Geraldine & Patrick Brown have another superb race here with three birds in the result. This has been another super season for one of the leading lofts in the Combine. Having already achieved 1st and 2nd Open themselves they wont begrudge the same achievement to Kevin and Kristopher whose birds do so well for them.

Geraldine and Patrick’s first bird is from the Rooney loft and is a Van Dyke x Lindelauf yearling cock winning its first club race here. It also takes 3rd Fed, 6th section, 6th Open.

Their second pigeon taking 4th Fed, 7th section, 7th Open is the bird that was 1st Open from 1st Fermoy. Another one from the Rooneys this one is a yearling Busschaert and is from the same lines as the bird that was 1st Fed, 3rd section, 9th Open from 1st Mount Charles. The sire is Lindelauf and these birds have featured regularly for both the Rooneys and the Browns. The dam is Busschaert from the birds Kevin and Kristopher got from D Shields, Son & Dtr from the North East of England.

Their third bird at 6th Fed, 11th section, 11th Open again from Kevin and Kristopher and is a Van Dyke yearling cock. This one was 3rd Open from 3rd Mount Charles.

Michael Jennings Annsborough is 7th Fed, 15th section, 16th Open here for another good result. Michael has had a very consistent season taking a Fed position most weeks and that’s not easy. The pigeon timed here was 4th Open 1st Fermoy, and 5th Fed, 23rd Open from the Derek Wishart Fermoy. He obviously likes Fermoy. The pigeon timed is a Willy Jacobs cock from Mr & Mrs Gerald Delaney’s Oroory Hill Stud. The dam of this cock was 1st club, 1st Fed from Mullingar last year.

James Cleland Annsborough with three birds in the top ten completes the result. This has been another wonderful season for James who has taken some impressive positions this year. James’ first bird here was 8th Fed, 16th section, 17th Open and is a Freddy Vandenheede. This one has already put up some sterling results this year taking, was 12th Open from 1st Mount Charles and 1st Fed, 2nd Open Fermoy. This yearling cock was unraced as a young bird but certainly has learned very quickly this year and will be a contender for Old Bird of the Year at both Fed and Combine level.

James’ second pigeon, taking 9th Fed, 17th section, 18th Open is off the ‘01’ cock, that was 2nd Open in the first ever Derek Wishart Memorial race in 2007. James was 2nd Open last year again in the Derek Wishart race with another the same way bred. The bird at 9th Fed here was 3rd Fed in the Derek Wishart race this year when he was 19th Open.

The pigeon at 10th Fed for James, taking 18th section, 20th Open is a Pros Roosen x Soontjens, from Maurice Alexander. This pigeon was 10th Fed, 32nd Open in the Derek Wishart race.
