On the best day so far of this young bird season the NIPA birds were in Clonmel for race five, liberation was at 11.00am last Saturday in a helping SW wind. Locally the best birds were timed in Rasharkin where the Steele & McNeill team having a top racing season had the best two birds at 14.02hrs flying 185 miles. Both birds recorded velocity 1788 and the winner was the best of the Hartog bloodlines, the dam supplied by Danny Dixon and the sire bred by Davy Mairs. Earlier this year this good Blue (c) which they have named Davy won 1st Club, 1st Comb, 1st Sect & 3rd Open NIPA from Roscrea with 13,600 birds competing. It looks like he has bred a Combine & Section winner as well, just fantastic. The second bird was a Danny Dixon Lambrecht followed by Willie McFetridge and Milliken & Barkley. Mr & Mrs Martin Sempey had the best bird in the town winning the big Ballymena & Dist for the second time in the young birds. Their Ch Pied hen was also timed at 14.02hrs recording velocity 1759, almost a mile a minute for the 182 miles into Ballykeel. The Sempey team are having a best ever season, also winning 2nd Club with a Lambrecht. The winner which had been hit by a hawk on its journey home was the best of the Van den Brande family and will be retired for the year to recover from injury. Other big local winners included B Swann & Son 1st Kells & Dist (1755), Jimmy Rock 1st Harryville (1742) with a Ch cock the sire Delaney/Lexi Mullan and the dam Allen McBride. J & N Simpson win Broughshane, MDC Magill the New Antrim, Reid Bros & McCloy another winner in Cullybackey and Jimmy Smyth another winner in Ahoghill having a great young bird season.
