The NIPA Old Bird Inland National was flown from Rosscarbery last Friday, one day earlier than planned due to the bad weather forecast for Saturday. It turned out a great decision and a fantastic race with early arrivals over the entire country and fairly good returns. Winners from Lurgan were Ronnie Higginson and partner Gregory Johnston and they have now named the bird, a 2 year old Blue w/f cock “Hollywood Spartacus”. Ronnie writes “The sire is one of the top sons from my foundation Hofkens pair, Witneus 128 and Blue Pearl which are responsible for 10 generations of winners all over the UK and Ireland. The Dam is a Verheye, a gift bird to me from my good friend, Paul Hope of Edgarstown bred from his old lines. Spartacus was sent to the OB National racing on widowhood, already a winner having many other prizes, and our first bird home from Clonmel the previous week. I would like to take this opportunity to thank my mentor, Mr Brian Keegan, whose friendship and guidance over the years made this possible.
