The oldest pigeon racing organization in Ireland founded in 1896 was the Ulster Federation based in Belfast, they held the award night recently in the Balmoral Hotel. The Browne Family traveled up from Northside in Dublin to collect the famous Millar Gold Cup presented to the first IHU bird from France. Gerald McGowan & Son from Grosvenor had the only bird on the day in the Old Bird Derby flown from St Malo and J & D Braniff from Wheatfield won the Ulster Fed Fancier of the Year for the second year in succession.

The IHU Meritorious Awards are presented for the best single bird performance in two cross channel races and for the first time both were won by members of the same club. Winners in Wheatfield HPS were D & G Ferguson and B & K Mullan and I believe this was the first time the two awards were won in the one club. The final presentation was the Inter Society Shield, the top club in the Ulster Federation won yet again by the members of Grosvenor HPS.

One Loft Up-Date

The North Coast Classic entries are arriving daily at a very steady rate, as you would come to expect and this weekend is set to see a large number of fanciers from all over Ireland attending with their hopefuls. The team already in the loft are already out daily (weather permitting) and are settling well to their new surroundings and adhering to the regime put in place by loft manager Sean Diamond who knows a thing or two about racing pigeons. Monday seen the arrival of the Tauris ETS team including Gary Tomlinson from England and Michael Reichmann from Minden in Germany, when I called just after 11 o'clock they had everything set up and all was looking good in all 10 traps will be in operation and as I explained previosuly the traps are installed to the avairies running the full length of the 140ft long loft, allowing for the attending fanciers to see all the pigeons entering the loft. Will have a bit more news next week on both the North Coast Classic and the Galway One Loft Race with Mick Flannery enjoying the company of another One Lofter last weekend that being Ritchie Elliott of the SWOL who brought his hopefuls over to Galway himself.
