Fermoy 5 Bird Championship - 08/06/14

The NIPA 5 Bird Championship race was flown from Fermoy on Sunday 8th June having been held over since Friday. Liberation was at 1.30pm in a South East wind, the birds were reported to be in very good condition when they arrived home. Kenny Glass from the Windsor Social in Coleraine had the best overall bird, timed into Bushmills and wins 1st Sect B & 1st Open NIPA on velocity 2075. This 4 year old Cheq cock has won every year from a young bird and it was the second time he has won 1st Sect B. The cock was driving his hen to nest, reeding is Harry Hearn, Sunderland and Billy Gibson. Runner-up from Ballymena & Dist was Old Hand Charlie McManus, the McFall & McManus team take 1st in Mid Antrim Combine. The breeding of the 2nd Open winner is “Invincible Spirit” bloodlines and the dam is his son Paddy’s 4th Open St Malo winner which is Koopman & Van-De-Pasch. Paddy McManus is a master breeder not only for his own family but for many others across the Province. Gene Gormley of Monaghan was 1st Sect E & 3rd Open NIPA with a Blue w/f cock bred by Allan McDonald of Portadown. Sire. Vandenbelle/Soontjen bred by B & H Marshall (Newtownbreda). This is the sire of Allan's 3rd Open Young Bird National Talbenny 2007. He is also a full brother to the partners 2nd Open in East Down Combine. Dam. A direct Belge, Smits en Van Winckel. Dam and grand-dam of at least 10 x 1st prize winners including one cock that won 3 x 1sts and was 7th North Section Skibbereen National. She also bred Tommy Ford's 2nd Open Clonmel, who in turn bred his 1st Section E winner this year. Gene tells me that the Blue w/f has been very consistent and after flying Rosscarbery National was 7th Club in Bude. He also wins the 2 Bird club for the third time this year. He was flying Natural and was sitting eggs 3 days.

Early bird into Ballymena -
The annual 5 Bird Championship was flown over the weekend, and in an effort to beat the poor weather forecast the birds were collected on Thursday with the hope of a liberation the next morning early in Mallow. When en-route the convoy was diverted to Fermoy where conditions were expected to be better. It was raining when they arrived and we had the poor weather which was forecast over the next couple of days. Liberation was finally possible on Sunday at 13.30hrs in a South East wind, and the winners made light work of the 200 miles. The big winner, out on his own was McFall & McManus of Ballymena & Dist timing at 16.20hrs recording velocity 2063 many yards clear of next best H & R McCloy Cullybackey doing velocity 1971. Reports were the birds were in fantastic condition despite two days in the race crates.

The big early local bird was timed by Kenny Glass of the Windsor Social, looking like 1st Sect B on velocity 2075 flying 219 miles having timed at 1636hrs. and will be well placed in the NIPA. Next best is Jimmy Hanson of the Coleraine Premier doing velocity 2013. This hen already this season has had 2 x 1st Clubs and a 2nd Club. She also won the section and the Yearling Hens in 2012 and has had a 2nd Section this year and probably a 1st Section A on Sunday. The best of the late Bob McMeekin’s Van Rijn/ Van Wildemeersch cross.

Early bird into Ballymena -
The annual 5 Bird Championship was flown over the weekend, and in an effort to beat the poor weather forecast the birds were collected on Thursday with the hope of a liberation the next morning early in Mallow. When en-route the convoy was diverted to Fermoy where conditions were expected to be better. It was raining when they arrived and we had the poor weather which was forecast over the next couple of days. Liberation was finally possible on Sunday at 13.30hrs in a South East wind, and the winners made light work of the 200 miles. The big winner, out on his own was McFall & McManus of Ballymena & Dist timing at 16.20hrs recording velocity 2063 many yards clear of next best H & R McCloy Cullybackey doing velocity 1971. Reports were the birds were in fantastic condition despite two days in the race crates.

The big early local bird was timed by Kenny Glass of the Windsor Social, looking like 1st Sect B on velocity 2075 flying 219 miles having timed at 1636hrs. and will be well placed in the NIPA. Next best is Jimmy Hanson of the Coleraine Premier doing velocity 2013. This hen already this season has had 2 x 1st Clubs and a 2nd Club. She also won the section and the Yearling Hens in 2012 and has had a 2nd Section this year and probably a 1st Section A on Sunday.
