Area Liberations start NIPA Young Bird season -

For the opening race of the young bird season the NIPA had the usual Area Liberations, race marking was delayed until Saturday and we had seven separate liberations on Sunday. Well done to the workers at Dromore who changed crates late at night in the rain. From Mullingar we had Sect B & Top Sect A at 11.45am, Sect H at 12.15pm, Sect C at 12.45pm and Sect D at 1.15pm. Sect F in Navan at 12.15pm. Finally in Tullamore Sect G at 1.15pm and Sect E & Bottom Sect A at 1.45pm. Wind was Light North, NW.

Bertie Blair best from Mullingar -

The young bird season started as usual with a series of Area Liberations, race marking was delayed until Saturday due to the weather. The Mid Antrim birds were first away on Sunday with liberation in Mullingar at 11.45am in a Lt North NW wind. There were some reports the birds were slow to come out of the transporter, no problem it seems for Ballymena who dominated the local result. Well trained Blair & Rankin had the Card of the Day with five birds in the Top 10 with the winner doing velocity 1242ypm. This Blue hen was timed at 14.09hrs flying 102 miles to Chichester Park, and has the top place in the Mid Antrim Combine.

Steady race from Mullingar -

The first young bird races of the season were Area Liberations, local birds were competing from Mullingar. All told this site had four liberations, Mid Antrim were first away at 11.45am followed by East Antrim one hour later, wind was Lt North NW. It was a steady enough race, a bit long on the wing for the first one, but most birds made home lofts with just a handful missing here and there. In East Antrim R Francey & Son have 1st & 2nd in Eastway with the winner doing 1326 while Tom Fleming in Muckamore was best around Antrim in the early liberation, and with his nominated bird as well. The new team in Randalstown Noel Percy and Sam Murphy won first time out in the young birds.

Dixon best in Area Liberation from Mullingar -

The first race of the young bird season was flown from Mullingar, an Area Liberation that included Mid Antrim birds plus Coleraine. Liberation was at 11.45am in a Lt North NW wind, this was the first of seven liberations for the NIPA. With a bit of a headwind the birds took a bit of extra time to fly the approx. 120 miles. Best in the local area was ace racer Danny Dixon with the winner in Ballymoney HPS recording velocity 1184. T & J McDonald of the Coleraine Premier recording velocity 1178 was best in Coleraine Triangle, just ahead of the very consistent Hanson & Harpur.
