East Down Combine 1st Clonmel
with Clifford Browne
COWAN & McCARTNEY TOP EDC FOR A SECOND WEEK
For the third race of the 2015 old bird season the East Down Combine were in Clonmel some 50 miles further than Tullamore and as the beautiful weather which had prevailed for the previous two races finally broke and the wind changed and the rain came in , the weather Committee of the EDC decided to hamper on Saturday for a Sunday race and although the weather at the home end improved on Saturday ,down around the race point I understand it was a different story so the decision to delay proved the right one and although the Sunday was colder than it had been of late the birds were able to get into the air at 8.30 into a light variable wind and clear blue skies and were home before the showers came in later in the afternoon .
Heading the Combine for the second week in succession are the Dundonald partnership of Rab Cowan & George McCartney whose winner this week is a 2yo Dark Cheq hen on Roundabout ,breeding is John Abernethy and is a Gaby Vandenabeele from John’s Stock birds and this hen has always been a steady racer but it is a great performance for a loft to top the EDC two weeks in succession . Many thanks to John for arranging the photo for me .
In second Open is another 2yo hen and this is to Bangor’s Reggie & David Moore who are having a tremendous start to the 2015 season having won all three races in Bangor and dominated the positions in all these races with having taken the top 12 places in the club from 1st Tullamore and then the top nine the next week ,again from Tullamore . This hen a 2nd open and topping the East section is another roundabout hen bred down from the partnership’s famous cock “Wingman” and their 11flighted hen .
The next two are to Walter & Gareth White of Newtownbreda followed by Ballylesson’s John Patterson and then two to Cloughey’s Harper & Young .
At the time of writing these results are provisional and we should have the confirmed result next week . The open and section reads;

Well it’s back to Clonmel this weekend and at present it looks like another headache for the weather Committee with the unsettled and at times wintry weather looking set to continue for the May bank Holiday and already the decision has been taken not to race mark on Friday night as Saturday looks to be a total washout and the jury is still out about Sunday I’ll be reporting next week on how it turns out .
