ROY WINS A SECOND OPEN FROM PILMORE BEACH
Saturday 23rd May saw the East Down Combine back in Pilmore Beach for the second race from there and with a light SW wind the birds were away 10.15am and the leading two birds recorded velocities just over the 1600 ypm and both of these were to lofts in Dundonald with the Open winner again being to Roy Irwin who was also the winner of 1st open from the first Pilmore Beach which is a great achievement -Well Done Roy .
The partnership of Stephen Brown & Sons also Dundonald are in 2nd place and then it is the turn of the Ballylesson partnership of C& D Smyth & sons who enjoyed a great race and take the next three places in the Open .
Many of the early pigeons were to the Westerly clubs in the Combine with the first over on the East coast at 7th open to Jackie Rankin of Millisle .

Donaghadee Lofts Beats All
The fourth old bird race of the year saw a return to Clonmel with an average flight home to the Ards Peninsula of around 180 miles. The weather was unsettled for the weekend so the hampering committee decided to basket on Sunday hoping to race on the first Bank holiday on May the fourth.
Monday dawned bright and the strings were cut at 8.00 A.M. and with a very helping south wind the pigeons made short work of getting home with speeds close to 70.m.p.h. Winning bird was clocked into the loft of Alex Trimble and family timing a roundabout Blue cock a cross between Roland Janssen and a Premier lofts Janssen to not only top the Amalgamation but also give Alex an Open victory and many congratulations on this success and I hope this is the first of many.
The Runners up were the fellow Donaghadee members ,the partnership of Chris Angus and Stewart McConkey the longest fliers in the East Down Combine with the loft having views of the Copeland Island to its back. They timed a Hen containing the best bloodlines from Reggie and David Moore of Bangor and it was flying also on roundabout to be second Club. Amalgamation ,Section and Open a great result for the team.

Thanks
I finish this week with a couple of snippets from my own loft starting with a sincere word of thanks to Brendan and the members of Rathnew who rescued a dark chq hen of mine which they spied in the water at Dunlaoghaire and which I understand was there for about an hour before they were able to get to her and then were able to get her returned to me and she appears none the worse for her adventure although she would have been better not trying to swim home .
The second tale concerns a 3 year old blue cock that went missing from Pilmore Beach who returned home some two weeks later ,unhurt except for some tail feathers missing and also his ETS ring removed and this had been replaced by a marker ring ,not the most sporting of acts though I was pleased to get this particular bird home .

This week sees the first cross channel event with the race scheduled to be flown from Talbenny on the 30th May.
