Following excellent racing conditions over the last number of weeks, the relevant Committees of all the organisations in Ireland had their work cut out at the weekend. The weather was atrocious to say the least and with the vast majority of weather reports showing no change for a number of days, some of the organisations decided to cancel their planned races all together, these included the East Coast Federation in Dublin, The Irish South Road Federation also Dublin and the Ulster Federation. The NIPA who were due to fly their first National of the 2009 season from Rosscarbery decided to cancel the event for one week and have re-scheduled it for this Saturday 23rd of May, on the same day the committee are also planning to run an official race from Fermoy.
Back to the weekend on hand and after much deliberation the NIPA decided that it would be possible to have a shorter race perhaps on Saturday and race marked the pigeons as normal on Friday evening with the transporters heading to Tullamore. A brave move by the committee indeed and one that paid off, for the convoy was liberated on Saturday afternoon at 1.30pm in a Fresh to Strong South Easterly wind and with a fast race expected the winners are doing over 2000ypm and returns are once again very good, although their wasn't the same number of birds away with many staying on the side of caution, with a number of clubs not sending at all which makes this weeks column a good bit shorter.
The East Down Combine were holding their first Classic of the season that being the Joe Ringland Skibbereen Classic which was to be flown just a few miles away from where the NIPA had planned to race from namely Rosscarbery, unlike the NIPA, the East Down Combine went on ahead with marking as planned on Friday evening and the transporter set on the road to Skibbereen, with conditions not good at the race point the pigeons were held over on Saturday, Sunday dawned to yet more rain, but with a clearing in sight in different areas of the North of Ireland and clear at the race point the convoy was liberated at 10.00am with the winning pigeons doing 1500ypm, yet again a very brave move by all concerned. As we go to press the probable winner of the Joe Ringland Classic looks very much like the formidable John Patterson of Ballylesson, without doubt one of the best fanciers to ever race pigeons into Ireland. John had the top pigeon into the Newtownbreda Centre, with D Croskery & Son leading the pack in the Crossgar centre and finally the Bangor partnership of Burgess & Brennan leading the field in the Millisle Centre.
Please Note ETS Unikon users. The INFC will be using the latest software update 3.01. Please have your pocket clock and loft base units updated to this version (3.01). A third clock centre will operate in Lisburn & District HPS, Smithfield Square Lisburn, Mr M Gibson is Centre Manager and the opening times will be as printed in the race entry booklet 7.00pm to 9.00pm. Same as the Banbridge and Muckamore Centres. Please check Lib Line on Saturday evening 23rd May for latest update on the race arrangements for Skibbereen.
David Black will be available to take the Yearling National entry forms at the marking for the Skibbereen Old Bird Inland National. The new Robin Duddy Challenge has an entry of £5 for a 3 Bird Nom covering Ylr Nat Sennen Cove and YB Nat Penzance. Robin has guaranteed £1,000 to the winner and has also presented a beautiful new cup to the INFC which will be presented to the overall winner at the National dinner in November. Do please support this new venture, the latest addition to an ever growing list of super awards.
Something else for the long distance minded lofts is the race from Narbonne International with a separate Hens result. Over 12,200 birds competed in 2008 and the race this year will be flown on 25th July. Open to the whole of the UK & Ireland there will be 13 Sections, one for every RPRA Region. Not sure of the distance to Ireland but its 550 miles to the SE coast of England. The RPRA Code is 9993. The special prize-giving dinner/reception will be at House of Commons on 7th November.
