Birds Almost reach 70 mph from Fermoy
26th May 2016

Saturday May 20th saw the East Down Combine back in Fermoy for their 2nd race of the season from there .It was a lovely morning with a South West wind favouring the birds but the forecast for later in the afternoon was for very heavy Thundery showers so it was decided to get the birds liberated earlier rather than later and they were away at 8.30 am . The velocities reflect the favourable conditions with the leading birds making velocities well into the 1900’s .
The leading birds were to Annalong’s John McCartan who had two together for 1st and 2nd open followed by Downpatrick’s Jackie Crossan at 3rd open and Crossgar’s Joe Quinn& son at 4th .the top six was completed by two more to the Annalong club to Kevin Rooney ,son & daughter at 5th and Jim Newell at 6th ,and these are also the top six places in the East section in fact East section fanciers take the top ten places in the open .
First West section bird at 11th open is to Dundonald’s Roy Irwin ,Comber’s Gary Lyttle was 2nd & 4th West section with Dundonald’s Mark Foulis 3rd West section . With the birds home before the afternoon most missed the torrential thunderstorms in the late afternoon and gave everyone a good days racing .The top Open and section places were :

This week sees the first of the cross channel races ,this week’s race is scheduled from Talbenny in Wales .
Returning for a moment to a couple of earlier performances ,last week I mentioned Bangor’s R Moore & son who again are enjoying a great season not only at club level where they won the first five races but also in the 2bird club where they have been in the result in the first 5 races and in several have had both their birds in the result .
From the Skibbereen Classic in the EDC Open they finished 9th and 10th Opeb 8th and 9th East section with two hens which were racing roundabout . The first a blue cheq was reared by Allan Develin and is Syndicate loft based the second also a blue cheq is a Syndicate loft crossed with their own family of birds .
Another loft which is performing well is that of Sid McLoughlin of Crossgar who has been very consistent each week with top performance this year to date 2nd open 2nd East Section from Thurles .
