Friendship Nat Update -
After the success of the Kings Cup we were brought down to earth again with a difficult Friendship Nat, not flown from Quimper as had been listed, but a change to Lamballe which we had flown before. Birds were race marked early Saturday and 875 birds released in France on Monday 10th July at 6.15am in a Lt West NW wind. A hard race was probably expected and just three birds were recorded on the day. Gregory Bros of Rathnew at 18.16hrs flying 349 miles, Mr & Mrs Beattie of Gilford at 20.37hrs flying 443 miles, and John Greenaway of Bondhill at 20.49hrs flying 447 miles. Overall winners were confirmed as C & H Beattie well done to them and Cyril follows in his late dad’s footsteps with Henry winning the Friendship Nat from Falaise in 1979. Mid & East Antrim lofts missed out on this occasion with only 16 arrivals recorded in the race time of 3 days.
Lamballe 201/875 – C & H Beattie Gilford & Dist 904, John Greenaway Bondhill Social 900, Gregory Bros Rathnew 853, Glen Buckley & Sons Annaghmore 703, Speirs & Campbell Cookstown 701, T Marshall & Son Newtownbreda 684, Donnelly Bros Millvale 516, D Coulter Glenavy & Dist 449, K O’Brien & Son Ind South 404, G Adair Crossgar HPS 352, S McAllister & Sons Lagan Valley 335, T Marshall & Son 331, T Mooney & Son Millvale 330, I Parkes & Son Armagh 269, J J McCabe Newry & Dist 253, T Marshall & Son 250.
In my report for the Kings Cup I missed out giving coverage to J & S Graham from Kingsmoss who timed a super bird just behind John Harkness who was best in the Muckamore Centre. On this occasion I never got my hands on a Centre Result to help me collate info available locally.
Jim Speirs let me know the partners got a good result in the recent Lambelle, INFC Friendship National race. The loft recently won the NIPA St Malo Nat, and have a fantastic record from France. The pigeon a Black Cheq hen was called 'One Direction' and finished 5th Open in the race. See photograph of the pigeon, Jim Speirs, co-owner Tommy Campbell and grandson Jamie, who is delighted with the result.
