What a day to remember for W & W Murdock of Coleraine & County Derry club on Saturday. Winky as we all know him by was a very good footballer in his younger days so was double celebrating Saturday as the mighty Bannsider’s (Coleraine) Blue and White Army where triumphant in the Irish Cup final ib Belfast and Winky timed his Blue Pied yearling hen to win the mighty NIPA from Fermoy.
I called with Winky on Sunday to congratulate him and also get some information of the winning pigeon. The winner is a lovely small Blue Pied hen of Herman Ceusters breeding originating from Alan Kelly of Omagh crossed with Soontgen lines from Paddy McManus of Ahoghill.
She was trained last year on our transporter from Navan and raced with the NIPA coming steady to the lofts. Winky said this week he had to keep chasing her out of the loft as she didn’t want to leave her section trying to get into the cocks showing she was well motivated and very keen.
Winky races what we call West of the Bann and he is set high above the town and would see his pigeons come from the East over the town to him - But not on Saturday.
He said he was standing in the garden looking over the town when he caught a White flash go by him very high straight from the South.
He looked up and saw his Blue Pied hen folding and dropping like a stone straight onto the stall trap. He duly had her rubber off and clocked her into his T3 clock.
This super little hen was to win the NIPA Open for Winky later that day, and was the only bird breaking the 2000ypm.
It couldn't have happened to a nicer lad as Winky is one of the best, a gentleman.
Well done mate on your achievement on winning the Mighty NIPA way up into Coleraine. Jimmy McSeveney PO.

W & W Murdock Coleraine & Co Derry 1st Open NIPA

To further promote the interest of our sport and our pigeons here in the northwest, as well as compiling a result for the City of Derry Combine; I am now also going to run a Combine Average. This is one overall Old Bird Flyer and one overall Young Bird flyer, with an Overall Combine Fancier of the year by calculating the two programmes scores together. This will run for each and every race with the 3 winners being presented with a trophy/plaque at the end of the racing season. The system is based on the old metric of the NIPA. As the Top 20 results are published, the winner will score 20 points down to 20th place scoring 1 point. This scoreboard will be published every 3 weeks and sponsorship is currently being sought. If no sponsorship can be gained, the Rabbett Family will sponsor this year.
After our 3rd race of the season, the Top 20 average scoreboard currently stands:
A McCrudden Derry & District 46 29 = 75; Rory Gallagher Derry & District 14 20 19 = 53; John McLaughlin Amelia Earhart 14 36 = 50; Danny Canning Derry & District 38 6 = 44; M Rabbett Amelia Earhart 38 3 = 41; Sean Malone Foyle 24 17 = 41; Cooley Bros Derry & District 6 33 = 39; J & G Ramsey Derry & District 7 5 26 = 38; Billy Houston Londonderry 11 19 = 30; Leo Flanagan Londonderry 17 12 = 29; N & C Doherty Maiden City 18 10 = 28; Lexi McCloskey Amelia Earhart 13 10 = 23; Joe Ebbs Derry & District 17 2 = 19; Tony Llyod Foyle 16 = 16; Paul Maxwell Foyle 15 = 15; William McCloskey Amelia Earhart 15 = 15; Mickey Jones Derry & District 13 = 13; Bob Freeman Londonderry 12 = 12; Frankie Ramsey Maiden City 8 2 = 10; P & M Healy Maiden City 9 = 9.
Fast Race from Fermoy – Mid Antrim Update
For the third race of the old bird season the NIPA birds were in Fermoy Co Cork, an average distance of 200 miles into Mid Antrim. A bit of mist and fog over the route delayed the liberation until 11.30am and almost 27,000 birds released from seven lorries must have been a sight to see. His 3 year old Cheq hen was timed at 14.38hrs recording velocity 1857 for the 199 miles. Next best William and Joe Smyth were the Ballymena & District winners in the third race from Fermoy. They timed at 14.42hrs flying 201 miles to the Carniny Road lofts. Their winner was a yearling Chequer cock racing widowhood. The cock had two prizes as a youngster and breeding is Van DeReen x Vandenabeele. The sire was 25th Section from Rosscarbery National. Mervyn Eagleson PO. Allan McBride put 5 birds in the Top 10 at Harryville including the winner timed at 14.44hrs flying 200 miles to Lettercreve Estate. His yearling Blue cock contained the lofts top bloodlines, the sire Young Spartacus (Soontjen/Hartog) was a double Sect winner from Fermoy and the dam was Jacob purchased from M/M G Delaney of Oroory Hill Stud.
