Many lofts look forward to the cross channel season, the opening race from Talbenny was due to be flown last weekend but was put back due to weather conditions. It was all systems go for this weekend with birds collected Thursday for a planned liberation come Saturday. It was always thought the best day of the weekend was Sunday and the NIPA liberation team soon took a decision on Saturday to holdover. Conditions although not perfect but considered good enough on Sunday, the strings were cut and 11,400 birds released in South Wales at 9.00am in a Lt Easterly wind. Reports were the birds had gone high and cleared well, there were a number of early arrivals to home lofts but lots of gaps and birds missing at night. Best in the NIPA was Jason and Jay Whitten from Portadown & Drumcree who have raced well all year and now take 1st Open on velocity 1546. It’s the first big winner in town for some three years, no mean feat. Winner was a Lambrecht bred by Wayne Doonan of the Cock Crow Lofts in Dromore. This super 2 year old hen has now won an impressive 3 x club firsts.

The 3 Bird Championship club is now up and running with the first race being this week’s race from 1st Talbenny any member wishing to enter these races will find detachable entry forms at the back of your year book, there are 3 divides in all pools and prize monies 50% 30% and 20%. Would all Race Secretary’s with members entered in this week’s Championship Club please send in a separate result for these birds. This week we had 51 members entering 138 birds with a total prize and pool fund of £803.80.

A massive congratulations to all the club winners this evening and a super congratulations to Barry Harte on topping the town, in what turned out to be a very difficult race for the lofts in the hard northwest. It is believed there are a lot of empty perches tonight. Hopefully birds will continue to make their way home in the morning. Nice to see that the Top 5 this week consists of the winners of the 5 clubs.

City of Derry Combine Averages update

With a few changes to the race programme and a delayed start, we are already half way through the old bird race programme for 2018. At this point in the combine averages, there are clearly 4 lofts well out in front of the rest of the town. The end result could go down to the wire between these guys but there is still everything to play for in the channel racing. It should turn out an interesting few weeks for the remainder of the programme. The top 20 positions in terms of points in the combine averages are as follows:

Leo Flanagan; Londonderry 171 pts, Paul Maxwell, Foyle 157 pts, A McCrudden, D & D 154 pts, J & G Ramsey, D& D 139 pts, Billy Houston, Londonderry 82 pts
