Yearling Cocks & Hens Nat Dunmanway - 17/06/18

Here's the article in the Banbridge Chronicle this week.
Smyth men’s birds create racing history
A BANBRIDGE father and his two sons have created pigeon racing history by winning TWO Yearlings National titles simultaneously.
Drumnavaddy Invitation’s Joe Smyth and his sons David and Andrew recorded a unique double having won both the hens’ and cocks’ races from Dunmanway in Cork on Saturday, June 16.
Remarkably the cock and hen came in together and clearly they had battled their way through some nasty weather in making way home to the warmth and comfort of their owners’ loft in Primrose Gardens.
Pigeon racing is a sport in which money sometimes can be made from pools. Alas, the Smyths had no pools on either of their two winners!
“We had 20 birds away and it would take a lot of money to do pools for all of them,” David explained. “The ones we had pooled didn’t come to the fore the way the other two did, but that’s the way it goes in pigeon racing.”
Asked to explain their unprecedented double, he replied, “It’s like horse-racing or any other such sport; you really need the bloodlines. But as well as that you need good husbandry, a lot of time, a lot of dedication, a lot of hard work and, at times, a bit of luck as well.
“Take last Saturday, for instance, There was a lot of tailwind, because the birds should have been back a lot sooner than they were.
“They seemed to have run into bad weather in the south, too, because when they came home they were soaking wet. So there’s a lot of luck involved in it sometimes.”
Nor is weather the only problem racing pigeons face, for increasingly predators play a part in what goes on, undetected, in the skies.
The frustration in Davis’s voice was evident as he said “There’s more and more raptors nowadays.”
But his mood lightened as he paused to reflect on the previous weekend’s remarkable result.
“It’s still hard to take in,” he mused. “It’s nice to have one bird win – and we’d done that twice before, so we knew what that felt like – but to have two winners on the one day is something very special.
“So, four in total, the last two of them on the one day; that’s a wee bit surreal.”
But while he, his brother and their father enjoyed the moment, David acknowledged that it would pass quickly.
“There’s another race this weekend and whoever wins that will be the talk of the place for a few days afterwards,” he pointed out. “You don’t get too long to enjoy any success before it’s somebody else’s turn. It near enough changes on a weekly basis!”
The Dunmanway event is followed by back-to-back weekends of racing from Penzance, Cornwall, after which will come three successive weekends in which the birds will have to battle their way through the skies over the English Channel and the Irish Sea as they make their way back from France.
“You need a good pigeon for that,” David said. “That takes a lot of stamina. And again, luck will play a part.”
At that he returned to the threat posed by predators.
“There’s numerous breeding hawks now,” he continued. “And while I’ve no idea of how many pairs of peregrine falcons there must be, I do know there’s plenty of them the length and breadth of the country.
“It’s a known fact that they’re taking pigeons because the guys are finding hundreds of rings in old peregrine nest sites. The RSPB try to tell us that they don’t do it, but pigeon men like ourselves know that they do.
“It’s unfortunate, but there you have it. For years we didn’t have a raptor problem but now we do, because they’ve been introduced over the past 20 years.
“It’s heart-breaking when you have bred good lines and have taken good care of your birds in every other way that you then lose some of them like this. But as things stand, there’s nothing we can do about it because they’re protected species.
“Now, I think the pigeon should be a protected species as well, but unfortunately it’s not at this stage. So in the meantime we just have to get on with things and take what we get.”

J Smyth & Sons Drumnavaddy - 2 x 1st Nat on same day
Smyth men’s birds create racing history
