“Christine” wins Talbenny Nat for Geoff Surgenor of Kells -
The Premier Young Bird Nat for the NIPA was flown on Sunday, the race was delayed due to poor weather conditions and after a testing season for the youngsters the overall entry was well down on seasons previous. Liberation was at 9.35am in a Westerly wind and although the big early arrivals were on time at clock checking in the various Centres many birds were still missing. In Mid Antrim the big early arrival was timed by Geoff Surgenor in Kells, it was thought he might be well placed and when the result was produced at tea time on Monday Surgenor Bros did indeed win 1st Open NIPA. He has named his winning Blue hen “Christine” after the wife of Davy Jackson from whom he got the Van Loon parents, which in turn were bred by Pete Norton.

The final will be flown from Rosscarbery YB National.

Five wins on the trot for Geoff Surgenor, 1st Sect Fermoy last week and from Talbenny 1st Open NIPA. His YB National winner “Christine” is named after the wife of Davy Jackson from whom Geoff got the Van Loon parents of the Blue hen.

Roy Clements who has had a fantastic young bird season had the Card of the Day from Talbenny, the loft had the first four birds home. Winner timed at 14.39hrs as a Black cock containing the best of his distance birds, recording velocity 1265 for the 218 miles. Sire is a half-brother to his Van Hee bird winner of 2nd Open Kings Cup Rennes while the dam was inbred to his Tommy Beckett birds.

Seven birds timed in Ahoghill, winner Jimmy Smyth timed his Blue w/f cock at 16.32hrs recording velocity 929 for the 220 miles. Mr & Mrs Robinson were a close runner-up.
Ballymena & District 6/22 – W & J Smyth 817. William and Joe Smyth have the only bird on the day from Talbenny YB National. The winning Blue chequer hen feeding two youngsters was clocked at 17.29hrs flying 220 miles. She was in Fermoy the previous week and breeding is Roland Janssen x Frans Zwols. J Eagleson & Sons timed a bird at lunch-time on the second day.
Rasharkin & District 8/44 – W & J McLean 1142, N Bradley 1086, W & J McLean 1022, Steele & McNeill 979. Well done to W & J McLean taking top spot from today's race from a very hard Talbenny. Danny Dixon – 1027, 960, 673. Only one bird has been recorded in the Wednesday 2-Bird Breeder/Buyer today from Talbenny in South Wales. It turned out a very difficult race. The Provisional winner of first prize today is Norman Bradley with his own bird winning first prize and £1000. The winner was timed at 15:47:11 and ring number is GB18R-14919 Cheq Pied hen. Two more prizes are still up for grabs tomorrow so please inform myself Jimmy McSeveney if you time tomorrow or the winning bird will lift all prizes.
