Details of the major YB Nationals Talbenny and Rosscarbery. Harryville HPS 9/51 – R H Clements 1265, 1079, 986, 951, W & D Rodgers 716, 586. Roy Clements who has had a fantastic young bird season had the Card of the Day from Talbenny, the loft had the first four birds home. Winner timed at 14.39hrs as a Black cock containing the best of his distance birds, recording velocity 1265 for the 218 miles. Sire is a half-brother to his Van Hee bird winner of 2nd Open Kings Cup Rennes while the dam was inbred to his Tommy Beckett birds.
Harryville HPS 4/27 – A McBride 1083, 1081, K & K Kernohan 1013, R H Clements 995, K & K Kernohan 993, 977. Allen McBride had the top result in the hard final race from Rosscarbery, he had two birds almost together at 16.12hrs with the winner doing velocity 1083. The sire won 16th Open Talbenny and 33rd Open in the Yearling Nat while the dam won Talbenny, a g/dtr of Jimmy Rock’s Talbenny Nat winner Rockies Boy.
The first ever Seven Towers Champion Loft winner was R H Clements of Harryville, if you look the results weekly you will not be surprised by this as Roy always featured, Roy had 3x1sts, 3x2nds, and various other top positions. Roy also timed 4 on the night from Talbenny which turned out a difficult race, only beat by Surgenor Bros as mentioned won 1st Open NIPA. The Top 5 in the Champion Loft are as follows: 1. RH Clements Harryville, 2. Surgenor Bros Kells, 3. K & K Kernohan Harryville, 4. A Darragh Cullybackey, 5. A McBride Harryville.
We then turn to the first ever Ace Young Bird. The winner of ace young bird was K & K Kernohan ofHarryville. This pigeon was timed in Roscrea, Dunmanway, 5 Bird, and Rosscarbery. The breeding of the hen is from the top winning lines of Luc Vermeerburgen and a hen from Gerald Delaney. Keith also had a good year of racing, as seen previous he won 3rd in the Champion Lofts, this hen played her part in that 3rd place finish. It was a tight finish for the ace young bird as R H Clements also had a strong claim further cementing that he had a fantastic season of racing. It was all down to the head to head to separate the two young birds with K & K coming out on top 4-3, this showed just how competitive it is in th Points (wins 4-3 on head to head), 1. K & K Kernohan Harryville – 65 Points, 2. R H Clements Harryville – 63 Points, 3. Surgenor Bros Kells – 58 Points, 4. RH Clements Harryville – 38 Points, 5. G Gibson Cullybackey - 36 Points.
Club officials are now Matt Wray a very long time member assisted by George Price who is Chairman. Address for the Secretary on Moat Road is the same as when my brother was Secretary for a short time in the early 70’s before heading to Florida in the USA. We started racing in the young bird season of 1971 with 13 youngsters and cut down to 12 when a bird hit wires and had to be put down. The programme was completed and with winning prizes in both Haverford I think it was then and Skibbereen we won the YB Ave. The next season with a small team we scored in most of the cross channel events and timed a bird early on the second morning to finish 36th Open Dinard enough to win the OB Average. Only remember reading that recently, never thought much about that at the time.
The Irish Region (RPRA) Annual General Meeting will take place in the Templeton Hotel in Templepatrick on Saturday 2nd February at 1.00pm sharp. If any member wishes to be on the Irish Nat FC Committee please attend the RPRA (Irish Region) meeting to be nominated.
