Old Hand Hugh Boyd from Randalstown has timed many birds from France over the years but this latest one might be the one of the best, timing at 5.44am and finishing 1st Mid Antrim Combine, 2nd Sect B and 3rd Open NIPA. In 2015 season Hugh Boyd recorded his winning bird at 16.35hrs flying 467 miles for velocity 1430 finishing 1st MAC, 1st Sect B & 3rd Open NIPA 434/1477 a fantastic result, 1st Section twice in 5 seasons in very different races.
Only two other birds were recorded in the Ahoghill Centre, Chris & Robin McIntyre of Cullybackey at 8.17am recorded velocity 855 flying 493 miles to Dervock and then A C & T Tweed had the only bird in Rasharkin & Dist at 12.46pm flying 488 miles. The McIntyre bird was a 2 year old Mealy hen, a double g/dtr of their 58th Open Kings Cup Rennes bloodlines was Ogilvie of late Charlie Wilson Kells x James Walker & John McConaghie of Ballymoney HPS. Raced as a young bird she was allowed to develop as a yearling and this season had three inland races including over 7 hours from Barleycove, then Talbenny and Bude before the trip to France.
New partner-ship lead the way from St Malo -
What a way to celebrate the arrival of a new partnership with a performance that will be remembered for years to come. At the start of this racing season Sam & Jason Bones and Trevor Yates who both raced in the Muckamore HPS decided to form a new partnership for racing having had good success while racing on their own. In recent weeks they had been getting a few positions but nothing to compare with the NIPA final event of the year from St Malo in France. For this Premier Old Bird National some 1,350 birds were entered by the NIPA with birds marked at varioue centres including Muckamore. Birds were race marked locally on Wednesday, and release in France was at 9.45am on Saturday 29th June in a Lt Southerly wind, all Irish Organisations released together.
It was the weekend of the big heat in France and parts of England had the best weather conditions of the year to date, not exactly suitable for the birds. A single bird was recorded on the day in Dromore Co Down to the top racing loft of Jeff Greenaway at a very late 23.07hrs, almost at dark. Early birds on the second morning were timed in the Ahoghill Centre including Hugh Boyd of Randalstown at 5.44am and then we had the news that Muckamore Centre had a big early one as well at 5.29am with S & J Bones & T Yates in the clock to record velocity 942ypm flying 458 miles. What a result to win 1st Club, 1st Sect C and 4th Open NIPA St Malo. Their 3 year old Blue hen was sent to the race flying to the perch bred from a stock pair gifted to the team by good friends Mr & Mrs McNeilly from Doagh & District. This was the very best of their Leo van Rijn family and the team thank Brian and Elaine for the top winning stock they have supplied to them.
Hugh Boyd from Randalstown, Chairman of the local club was making the news in Mid Antrim having timed many birds from France over the years but this latest one might be the one of the best finishing 1st Mid Antrim Combine, 2nd Sect B and 3rd Open NIPA. This year he timed a five year old Blue Cheq hen which was a late bred, not raced in its first two seasons and as a 2 year old its first race was Rosscarbery 250 odd miles. The base of the loft goes back to birds obtained from the late George McWilliams out and out distance. As I said earlier the bird was timed at 5.44am while he was down checking the loft and ETS, flying 467 miles he recorded velocity 955ypm.
