Henry Beattie former Kings Cup winner has been a great supporter of the INFC for many years and has always encouraged French racing. The second OB National for the Flying Club is known as the Friendship National and it is a race the Beattie family have been keen to promote. Henry and his son Cyril who in his own right is a top class pigeon man presented the INFC with a new trophy for the Best-2-Bird Average from the Friendship National.
The trophy was first flown for in 2002 with the race point being Fougeres and the winner James Cleland, Annsborough one of the Combines top National flyers. The Cleland loft with only three away won 3rd & 6th Open.
This years Friendship National was flown from Picaunille and Cleland was the only Combine fancier to clock in race time winning 21st Open
2003 and the race point was again Fougeres. Alan Darragh, Cullybackey former Kings Cup winner flew a brilliant race and with only three birds entered he won 1st & 3rd Open. 2nd Open went to Cyril & Hilary Beattie the race sponsors.
2004 saw the INFC experience the type of race that no one wants but flying from France they do happen. Only two birds were recorded in race time with the winner being Ronnie Williamson, Bond Hill and believe it or not Mr & Mrs Beattie Gilford were 2nd Open, the Beattie Trophy not being won.
With a record entry of 1,020 birds and the race point being Picauville the 2005 race saw Ronnie Williamson of Bond Hill win 1st Open for the second year in succession. It was also a double for Alan Darragh, Cullybackey who won the Beattie Trophy for a second time finishing 5th & 7th Open.
2006 saw the race move to Portland and the entry was a massive 1740 birds. Sammy Briggs, Lisburn enjoyed a super race winning 3rd & 5th Open. These two outstanding National flyers Alan Darragh and Ronnie Williamson were 1st & 2nd Open with Ronnie just missing out on winning the Friendship National for a third year in succession.
The 2007 race was again flown from England, this time the race point being Portsmouth and the entry was again good at 1443 birds. The 2-Bird Average was again flown by the man himself Ronnie Williamson of BondHill 5th & 22nd Open.
Henry Beattie was a happy man as the Friendship National in 2008 was back in France flown from Quimper with the 2-Bird Average winner being Mark Hughes Edgarstown 12th & 17th Open. It was a very hard race the winner being Donnelly Bros of Newry timing the only bird on the day of liberation. Ronnie Williamson seems to farm this race as he is again 2nd Open.
This year the race point was Picauville and the entry was the second highest in the history of the race with 1014 birds. New records on a number of fronts were set by the brilliant Newry partnership of Malachy Maguire & son. 1st & 2nd Open, two blue hens arrived together making velocities of 911.5ypm and 911.4ypm. The Maguire loft win the Friendship Cup, 1st Open Barcelona Trophy, 2nd Open H Beattie & son Trophy, Best 2-Bird average and for good measure the Irvine Cup Best Average, Vannes Kings cup (13th Open) and Picauville.
One of the most brilliant pigeons ever flown by the Maguire family was the blue cheq cock known as Home Alone. He had a super record from 2000 to 2002 on the road but it is in the stock loft that he has proved to be a gold mine a bit like Sadlers Wells in the horse breeding world. Lets look at his race record first Tramore 1st Cub, 1st Combine, 1st Section NIPA. Rosscarberry OB Inland Derby 1st club, 3rd Combine, 25th Section G, 167th Open.
Sartilly NIPA OB Derby 1st Club, 1st Combine, 3rd Section G, 29th Open as a yearling. Fougeres NIPA OB Derby 1st Club, 1st Section G, 1st Combine, 1st Open Velocity 874ypm (only bird on the day). At stock and mainly paired to the Super cheq pied hen Portavogie Lass a whole string of Derby, Classic and French winning pigeons have been bred.
The purchase of Portvogie Lass by Malachy was a stroke of Genius. Most of my readers know the history of Potavogie Lass, 1st Club, 1st Section, 1st Open EDC Dinard OB Derby from Dinard and the only bird on the day from all organisations racing from dinard 5,000 pigeons and winning the coveted Millar Gold Cup.
Malachy's son Mark also flys his own team and in 2008 won 1st Club, 1st Section G, 1st Open NIPA St Malo OB National with a mealy hen, this hen flew Talbenny twice, Bude and Sennen Cove before going on to win St Malo.
The day of the National winner is none other than Portavogie Lass when paired to a red cock from long timed friend Dave Goddard, Reading. Malachy has also been very pleased with the results now being achieved with select pigeons interlaced with former Kings Cup Winners N Black & sons, Dromara.
Now don't get the idea that the Maguires birds only enjoy Channel as they have won more than their share on the land. The main pigeons doing the damage on the land are long time friend Gerald Delaney of Drodry Hill Stud. The star at the moment is a blue jacobs hen called Blue Gem and a winner of some 5x1st prizes. 2008/9 have been outstanding years for the Maguires and I have a feeling that there is more to come.
