The INFC Hall of Fame Diploma is now well established as one of the most coveted awards in the National Racing Programme. I am sure that the INFC new award now named the Triple Crown Diploma will take its place as a much coveted Diploma in the year ahead.
To win the Diploma a pigeon must achieve the following performances, Open Prize Winner, Penzance YB National, Open Prize winner Sennen Cove Yearling National and finally the Kings cup. The winning pigeon must achieve this outstanding feat in three consecutive races. I have been a life time in pigeons and if I was to choose an award that it would be my ambition to win, then this would be it.
The first fancier to win the Triple Crown Diploma in the south Section of the INFC is Joey McLoughlin of Blanchardstown RPC with his chequer pied hen bred in 07 and now named Daisy Rocket. In 2007 she was to win 49th Open YB National then 223rd Open Yearling National and finally this year 55th Open Kings Cup.
Joey first raced pigeons in 1976 and was a member of the strong Finglas Club, then married in 1980 before moving to his present address in Blanchardson, North West Dublin.
He races his pigeons on the roundabout system with very good results at club level having previously raced Widowhood. The new system lets him race hens and these have played a major part in the loft winning some 37x1st prizes since 2006. Joey finds it hard to get into the Fed result unless the wind is from the east, but he still won Penzance Open in 1994. The loft also won Youghal in 1996 with 6,500 birds competing.
The chequer pied hen Daisy Rocket is from Joey's old family of mainly Janssen x Busschaert. Daisys grand sire won 5x1st's at Club level and many Federation returns, he was called Pocket Rocket.
A story behind her sire a Flor Engels bred by Natural Breeding Station in Belgium. the story behind him is, a young friend of Joey's asked him to the North Side Club in Dublin where there was a YB sale, all birds being sold for 30 euro each. Joey ended up in buying five, four of which went down very quick but the one remaining a Pencil Cock Belg 04 6014376 won 4x1st's at Club level and 30th Fed plus 61st Open ISRF.
Daisy Rocket was sent to Vannes Kings Cup sitting 10 days on eggs after having a few inland races and finally Sennen Cove two weeks prior to Vannes.
Hopefully next year Joey will follow the same path and have another crack at winning the Kings Cup. All I can say is that he should be a very proud fancier, as his hen has won for him a major award within the INFC.
New North Flying Club.
This Club have now disbanded after serving the fanciers in Antrim and Mid Ulster for many years with a series of channel races. The Club have purchased a number of cups and one of these has been presented to the INFC. Maurice Alexander a very keen National supporter selected the cups and I have the INFC Cup in my possession, let me tell you that it is magnificent and up for competition this year.
The criteria set for winning this cup is as follows, Best Average Four INFC Races Yearling National, Kings Cup, Friendship National, Penzance YB National. With three of the leading contenders.
Let me start with two former National Champions C & L Woodside of Ballyclare, 84th Open Kings Cup, 4th Open Friendship National, 178th Open Yearling National. Phillip McCullough & daughter of Downpatrick, 58th Open Kings Cup, 6th Open Friendship National, 88th Open Yearling National. Former Kings Cup winner, Paddy Rock & son Martin of Skerries, 35th Open Kings Cup, 8th Open Friendship National, 4th Open Yearling National. Former Hall of Fame winner John Greenaway of Bondhill, 20th Open Kings Cup, 15th Open Friendship National, 105th Open Yearling National. National winners Malachy Maguire & son of Newry, 13th Open Kings Cup, 1st Open Friendship National, 135th Open Yearling National. Mark hughes of Edgarstown who won the H Beattie & son Trophy in 2008 from the Friendship National has scored in all three Nationals flown for the New North FC Cup, 164th Open Kings Cup, 7th Open Frienship National, 31st Open Yearling National.
With only the Penzance YB National to come I think that Paddy Rock and Malachy Maguire are in pole position but we all know how difficult this YB National can be.
I hope that no one who has scored in all three has been missed, if so then please get on the phone with the details right away.
New North Flying Club let me go back to this new cup presented to the INFC. In my coverage of those fanciers in contention to win this cup, I must point out that there are several more fanciers that could win the cup as they have clocked in all three races but may have just missed out in making the Open result, and remember the final race is the Penzance YB National and we all know how difficult this race can be.
One of those fanciers who has clocked in all three races is Arnold Thomson of Ballyclare and his record from the Friendship National is truly outstanding, 8th Open 2007, 7th Open in 2008 and 3rd Open in 2009.
Gregory Bros, these brothers race in Rathen and from 2001 to 2008 have won 120x1st Clubs, 12x1sts in Open Races, 37x1st Feds, 9x1st Sections in National, 3x1st Nationals, Five Gold Medals, 5xT3 clocks and 4xTv's not a bad CV you will have to agree.
The Gregory Brothers have a brilliant record in breeding top class winners for other fanciers, these are a few of the best. 2007 1st Section, 1st Open INFC Sennen Cove Yearling National for J & J Merrigan Rathnew. 2008 2nd and 3rd YB National, 4th & 7th South Road Fed winning some 4,500 pounds for Alan Farrell of Dublin. 2009 1st Section, 1st Open IHU National fling Club Sennen Cove for Pat Lambert of Arklow. I think that you will agree that this is very impressive.
I first met the brothers in 2002 when they had a super result from the INFC Skibbereen YB National, 1st, 9th, 66th, 67th & 82nd Open, five in the first 100 of a National, magnificent . 2003 they won 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 5th, 7th & 8th Open OB National. 2004 they collected another 1st National, this time with the YB's.
In 2006 they just missed out on winning another National finishing 1st Section, 2nd Open Wadebridge velocity 1071 ypm. In 2005 the brothers first met Colin Gibson and Roger was telling me that they have won, right from the day one and they are delighted with the quality of them.
In 2008 a lovely young hen won 3x1st Clubs and 3x1st Feds with some 3,500 birds in each race, another young hen won 1st club Skibbereen and was clocked from the INFC Yearling this year.
A Gibson bred tyoung cock won the Wicklow SR breeder/buyer in 2007 and these are only a sample of the of the winners for the brothers. The Gregory Brothers were very dissapointed to learn that Colin, due to ongoing health reasons would be selling all his birds at auction in early October, Glenavy, Dublin and Newtownbreda the likely venues.
