Beattie/Versele Laga Awards Night 2009

Mathieu De Clippel from Belgium was the special guest at the annual presentation of awards sponsored by H Beattie & Son in conjunction with Versele Laga held at the Seagoe Hotel in Portadown on Thursday 22nd October. The Beattie Family through Henry and son Cyril are long time supporters of the local fancy, directly associated with sponsorship of the NIPA 5 Bird Mallow Championship, the NIPA Friendship OB Nat Picauville, Glenavy Gold Wing and for the first time last season the North Coast Classic the Coleraine based One Loft Race.
NIPA Mallow 5 Bird winners: Sect A – L Neill Ballymoney, Sect B – J Connolly Ballymoney, Sect C – S Rodney & Son Ballyclare, Sect D – J Greenaway Dromore, Sect E - B Corley Monaghan, Sect F – R Shaw Corrigs, Sect G – McAteer & Pearce Millvale, Sect H Quigley & Dunne Maiden City.
INFC Friendship Nat Picauville winners: 1st & 2nd M Maguire & Son Millvale, 3rd A Thompson Ballyclare, 4th & 5th C & L Woodside Ballyclare, 6th P McCullough & Daughter Downpatrick, 7th M Hughes Edgarstown, 8th P Rock & Son Skerries, 9th Mr & Mrs Magill Muckamore, 10th J Waring & Son Lisburn & Dist.
The Glenavy & District HPS Gold Wing Race sponsored by H Beattie & Son was flown on Wednesday 18th August from Mallow in County Cork, special race rings are purchased for the event and birds that complete the training and race programme in preparation go the final Gold Ring event. Some 60 members sent 273 birds competing for almost £6,000 in pools and prizes.
Overall winners were Cooney Bros from the Monaghan HPS recording velocity 1724 and winning £1,414 which included the £5 Nom and Ladies Nom plus the Gold Wing Trophy sponsored by H Beattie & Son from Tandragee. David Calvin from Bondhill was runner-up doing velocity 1720 and all pooled to collect £1,200 followed by Richard Mulligan from Monaghan, D Calvin with a second bird, David Mawhinney & Son from Beechpark in Lurgan and Sam Corrigan from Loughgall.

It was another very well attended night and a great credit to the Beattie Family who put in a big effort each year to present something different which is appreciated by everyone. President Diamond Carson did a very good job standing in for the NIPA Officials who were unable to attend, he confirmed that H Beattie & Son have signed up again for continued sponsorship over the next three seasons. Race Co-Ordinator Trevor Steele gave a report on a very good first season for the North Coast Classic and said the team would be present at all the major shows including Dublin, Belfast and Blackpool. Sam Porter and John Harkness attended for the Glenavy Gold Wing event won by Cooney Bros from Monaghan and John spoke well about an event that has been going strong for a number of seasons and will have some slight modifications for 2010. INFC officials present included Chairman Syd Collins and Patron Ronnie Johnston who as usual gave an excellent report covering both the past and present, no one can do this better.
Prizes in the raffle included young birds presented by M Maguire & Son, John Abernethey from Harmony Lofts and Gerald Delaney from Oroory Hill Stud plus free entries for the next North Coast Classic and the Belgium Masters. The event included visitors from Scotland and Ireland, getting more International every year.

Dunne & Quigley from the Maiden City RPS in Derry were the winners of the NIPA Sect H.

The McAteer & Pearce team from Millvale in Newry racing a very small team were NIPA Sect G winners, they also topped the NIPA Open.

Former INFC Nat Champions Mr & Mrs Magill won 9th in the INFC Friendship Nat Picauville, included Mathieu De Clippel and INFC Chairman Syd Collins (l).

Philip McCullough & Daughter from Downpatrick finished 6th in the Friendship Nat, the loft were the INFC Nat Champions recently.

Yet another Nat Champion Leslie Woodside from the hot-bed of Ballyclare won 4th & 5th from Picauville, C & L Woodside are the team to beat.

Hilary Beattie and Ronnie Johnston present the INFC Friendship award to Malachy and Mark Maguire from Millvale, they won 1st & 2nd Open from Picauville, only 22 birds home.

Henry Beattie presents the Glenavy Gold Wing prize to John Harkness (L) and Samuel Porter, the late Bob Harkness and Kirker Porter were legends in the sport from the distance.

Alan Rodney from Ballyclare collects the NIPA Sect C award for Mallow 5 Bird on behalf of S Rodney & Son.

Robert Shaw from Corrigs had 1st Sect F in the Mallow 5 Bird National.

Former Friendship Nat winner Jackie Waring from Lisburn & Dist has a good race record winning 10th Open INFC in the last two seasons.

P J Corcoran from Dublin collected the 8th Open Picauville award for Paddy Rock & Son from the Skerries.

Mark Hughes from Edgarstown scored 7th Open Picauville.

Ballyclare fancier Arnold Thompson took a good 3rd Open INFC Friendship Nat Picauville, this loft has a fantastic distance record.

M Maguire & Son had two birds together to win 1st & 2nd Open INFC Picauville.
