The RPRA Awards are presented at the annual Ladies Night for the NIPA, held recently at the Templeton Hotel in County Antrim. Irish Region Secretary’s Mr & Mrs Robert Reid were on hand to present the various awards, claim forms are available and must be submitted on time or will not be considered.

RPRA (Irish Region) Awards 2009:

The RPRA (Irish Region) Meritorious Awards are presented in each NIPA Section, for individual bird performance from two cross channel races, in 2009 they were Talbenny (2) & Penzance. Section winners were: Sect A – Gerald Marshall Cookstown Social Vel 1072, Sect A West – No Claim, Sect B – W & J Smyth Ballymena & Dist HPS Vel 1063, Sect C – Tommy Peel Carrick Social Vel 1037, Sect D – M & F Russell Dromore WE Vel 1065, Sect E – Geoffrey Douglas Wilton Cross Vel 954, Sect F – Jackie Crossan Downpatrick Vel 919, Sect G – Donnelly Bros Newry City Vel 1045. Overall winner was Gerald Marshall Cookstown Social.

Gerald was unable to attend the event but I caught up with him last weekend and got a photo and some details. Having the overall winner across all the NIPA Sections is a top performance, the bird a Dark Cheq hen he has named Millview Lady and she was bred by the top Cookstown partnership of Speirs & Campbell. As expected she carries all the lofts top bloodlines the old Kenyon & Delbar etc. The sire was placed in the Rosscarbery OB Derby and was then 2nd Sect & 18th Open NIPA Talbenny. The dam took 141st North Sect & 162nd Kings Cup Vannes 2006 and is a mixture of lines through W N Davidson Portadown and the Blacks of Dromore Kings Cup birds. In the pedigree I noticed a bird flown France four times and other lines of Gilmour & Beattie and Rab Smyth Larne. For the Meritorious Award the winner firstly flew Talbenny (2) and then a fortnight later Penzance with a big result. With the NIPA Millview Lady won 1st Club, 1st Sect A & 7th Open 866/9,054 on velocity 1015 and in the duplicate OB Classic 1st Club, 1st Sect A & 4th Open NIPA 501/3,491. To round off a good season Gerald timed a Blue Pied hen FVW & Busschaert first time France to win 1st Club, 92nd North Sect & 115th Open INFC Kings Cup Plaudren/Vannes. Well done Gerald and I will be keeping an eye for future results.

NIPA French Diploma Awards – Highly Prized

The NIPA French Diploma Awards were introduced around 15 years ago and in that time just a small number of birds have achieved repeated success at the distance. The awards are presented to birds that achieve positions in the Premier Old Bird National. Scoring twice is Bronze Diploma and a fair number of those have been presented with just one season being missed. It gets more difficult for the Silver Diploma having to score three times and then the major prize the Gold Medal & Diploma when the Champions score for the fourth time. The 2007 season was as good as any, 17 Bronze Diplomas, 5 Silver Diplomas and Alan Darragh from Cullybackey wins a Gold Diploma for the second time with “Champion Betty’s Girl”.

The first Gold Medal & Diploma was won in 2000 by Murphy & Martin of Cookstown with Billy’s Pride, followed in 2001 by Speirs & Campbell of Cookstown with Tommie Girl and Alan Darragh with Golden Dreams. Only five have been won up to 2009, that includes B & M Gilmore who collected the major award in 2008 with “Champion Easton Gold” and Alan Darragh from Cullybackey holds the premier place with two.

2007: Gold Medal & Gold Diploma won by – Alan Darragh, Cullybackey HPS. Champion Betty’s Girl won 24th Sect B & 133rd Open NIPA Lamballe 04, 189th Open NIPA Portland 05, 9th Sect B & 102nd Open NIPA St Malo 06 and 15th Sect B & 146th Open NIPA Lamballe 07.

2008: Gold Medal & Gold Diploma won by – B & M Gilmore, Ballyclare & District. Champion Easton Gold won 19th Sect C & 78th Open NIPA Portland 05, 6th Sect C & 29th Open NIPA St Malo 06, 41st Sect C & 147th Open NIPA Lamballe 07 and 4th Sect C & 22nd Open NIPA St Malo 08.

Just for the record I have had a look at the Silver Diploma and this list reads. 1994 – A Darragh Cullybackey 1995 – J Logan Ballyclare & Dist and C Cameron Ballyclare & Dist. 1998 – Campbell & Francey Harryville. 1999 – J Geary & Son Lurgan Social, D McCullough & Son Kells & Dist and Murphy & Martin Cookstown. 2000 – A Darragh Cullybackey, N Weir Loughgall, E Campbell & Son Coleraine Premier and Speirs & Campbell Cookstown. 2001 – J & R Crawford Larne & Dist, W McClure Kells & Dist and J Carson & Son Corcreeney. 2006 – J McMurrough & Sons Corrigs, A Darragh Cullybackey, Furphy Bros Lurgan Soc and J Adamson Gilford & Dist.

Just 18 winners from the first winner which was Champion Noel raced by Alan Darragh, he won 1992 – 33rd Open NIPA, 1993 – 39th Open NIPA and 1994 – 13th Open NIPA. Adding the five winners in 2007, four in 2008 and three in 2009 brings the Silver Diploma total to 30.
