Smyth Loft Of Ahoghill Best In Young Bird Opener
The first young bird race of the season was held from Kilbeggan on Saturday 27th July. The Nipa released the youngsters at 12 noon in light westerly winds. Ahoghill fancier's Jimmy Smyth & Son recorded the best two birds in the Mid Antrim Combine after timing at 14.05 & 14.06pm flying 111 miles. Jimmy's two birds also finished 1st & 2nd Section B on 1563 & 1552. The winning bird was from a kit purchased from Derek Parr of Portadown and the second one was in a kit from Mark Milliken of Rasharkin. Jimmy's second Combine win of the season having won from Fermoy in week four. Bertie Blair won Ballymena & District and was also best in the local town and 3rd Combine & 3rd Section on 1530. Sire was from Davy Campbell of Eastway and is down from "The Rook" and the dam from clubmate Martin Graham. Paddy & William McManus of Ahoghill were next best on 1522 and had a top team performance finishing 4th, 6th, 7th, 8th, 11th Combine & 5th, 8th, 9th, 10th & 13th Section. Johnston Eagleson & Sons the Ballymena runner up took 5th spot in the Combine on 1516. Other club winners included Marc Neilly in Broughshane on 1510 with a dark cheq cock bred from a Jacob cock from Mervyn Gregg of Kells x Lambrecht hen from clubmate Alastair Purvis. Stewart Bros were best in Randalstown on 1498, Jonathan Barkley & Laura Surgenor tops Kells on 1497, Sam Crawford won Harryville on 1493, Alan Darragh best in Cullybackey on 1489 and Freddie Barkley had the winner in Rasharkin on 1445.
