Northern Ireland Channel Federation – COPD Charity Open Race.
The charity race for COPD Fund, in memory of my late father John “Rocky” Reid, got under way on Sunday 25th April. The race was flown from Kildare and after a tricky start to the day, the weather improved in time for the liberation at 12.30pm. The birds were liberated in a south west wind, and the wining velocity recorded was 1666, by the lofts of T & K Mawhinney who also took the next 4 positions in the open. An excellent performance from Mawhinney Lofts, winning £250 in prize money, taking all off the pools and the best 2-bird average hamper prize containing, Paloma Products sponsored by Henry McLaughlin of Coalisland. I was chatting to Timmy early that morning and he was quietly confident and I can see why. A partnership to watch out for this year, if this result is anything to go by. I would like to congratulate them both on their fantastic performance. The Nom was won by Kevin Douglas of Lurgan Social winning 3 bags of corn, sponsored by Cyril Beattie of Laurvale. The young bird donated by Ronnie Williamson was won by Tom Wilson of Bleary.
The result is as follows for the first 20 in the open;
1st Open T&K Mawhinney 1666, 2. T&K Mawhinney 1664, 3. T&K Mawhinney 1647, 4. T&K Mawhinney 1645, 5. T&K Mawhinney 1643, 6. Tom Wilson 1641, 7. Gregory O’Dowd 1640, 8. Tom Wilson 1639, 9. Tom Wilson 1638, 10. Tom Wilson 1630, 11 Tom Wilson 1628, 12 Tom Wilson 1627, 13 Gregory O’Dowd 1624, 14 J Douglas & Son 1622, 15 G J Douglas 1621, 16 Joe Brown 1620, 17 J Douglas & Son 1616, 18 Gregory O’Dowd 1606, 19 D & B Lyness 1605, 20 G J Douglas 1589.
My family would like to take this opportunity to thank all of the prize winners for donating there prize money back into the COPD fund. We were really taking back by there generosity. It just goes to shows, that there is no better sport that gives as much, when it comes to raising money for charities.
We would like to thank Edgarstown club members, not only for the clubrooms, but for their help on the day as well. We would like to thank Ronnie Williamson for use of his transporter and for donating a young bird for the raffle. We would also like to thank all of the pigeon fanciers who sent birds to the race and for the many fanciers who donated money as well. Last but not least, I would like to thank Westland Horticulture (Garden Products) and Jim Porter of Porter’s, Car Body Repairs and for their kind donations.
After a successful day, we raised a total of £900.00. My father Rocky would have been very proud of this and of the support, which was given to me when organising the race.
I would like to wish all of the fanciers all the best for the season ahead.
Thanks Colum Reid.
