The local birds were racing last weekend from Roscrea in Co Tipperary, released on Saturday at 10.45am in a Fresh SE wind. The best birds locally were to the high flying Diamond Bros of the Coleraine Premier 1st & 2nd Club with the winner recording velocity 1413, and 1st & 2nd in the Coleraine Triangle. Next best A McCorriston is 1st Coleraine & Co Derry (1402) and Kenny Glass has another 1st Windsor Social (1371).

Race four of the young bird season was flown as planned from Roscrea in Co Tipperary, birds released last Saturday at 10.45am in a Fresh SE wind. Liberation had been delayed to give time for mist and fog to clear over the route. Best bird locally was timed in the big Ballymena & Dist where over 400 birds were competing for the second week James Harris timed his Blue hen at 13.56hrs recording velocity 1371 for the 148 miles. He wins 1st Club, a different winner of each race to date and the club lift 1st Combine for the second time, over 2,500 birds competing here. George Connolly is next best with 1st & 2nd in Broughshane (1369) followed by Mr & Mrs Sempey having a best ever season and J & N Simpson. Other club winners well placed included Milliken & Barkley 1st Rasharkin & Dist (1365), Stewart Bros 1st Randalstown (1356), McFall & McManus 1st New Antrim Amal (1348), A McBride 1st Harryville (1345), G McDowell 1st Kells & Dist (1344) and Reid Bros & McCloy 1st Cullybackey (1340).

Surgenor Bros (Kells) best in Mid Antrim -

The young bird race three was most interesting, race marking for Roscrea was delayed until Saturday hoping for a Sunday liberation. The weather conditions were impossible on Sunday, and after failing to release, the convoy was moved back to Tullamore some 20 odd miles nearer home. In the first mass liberation of the young bird season the NIPA birds were released in Tullamore at 8.00am on Monday in a Lt Westerly wind. It was reported birds were slow to clear and the race was a bit erratic, most lofts had birds missing on the day. Best in Mid Antrim was Surgenor Bros of Kelly & Dist who timed at 10.44am recording velocity 1359 for the 126 miles. Chairman of the club Brian Swann was next best doing velocity 1355 and he had three early birds. Blair & Rankin had 1st Ballymena & Dist who had over 400 birds competing, the largest entry for 10 seasons, followed by the previous week winners Mr & Mrs Martin Sempey. These two lofts shared the top seven places. McFall & McManus had 1st New Antrim Amal and R H Clements was 1st Harryville. Danny Dixon has won three on the trot into Ballymoney.

East Down Combine birds were released in Tullamore Co Offaly last Saturday at the early time of 9.30am and had an excellent race dominated by the West Sect who filled all the Top 20 positions. Two lofts shared the top eight places, Tom Marshall & Son from Newtownbreda took 1st, 2nd, 6th, 7th & 8th Open, with Mark Foulis from Dundonald 3rd, 4th & 5th. Annsborough had the top places in the East Sect with Mickey Croskery doing 1360 just a decimal point ahead of J McNally & Son. D Croskery & Son were 3rd, 4th & 5th then twelve in a row for R Moore & Son of Bangor who had The Card of the Day.
