Good Start to the Young Bird Season -

For the start of the young bird season the NIPA as usual had a series of Area Liberations, by all accounts it was a perfect start and very few birds missing. Birds were released in Navan, Mullingar and Tullamore, due to weather problems crates were collected Saturday evening and all birds released on Sunday between 9.15am and 12.15pm. A large number of members were not ready for the opening race, it’s the same every season.

Coleraine Premier HPS 11/442 – Hanson & Harpur 1418, 1409, 1407, 1406, 1406. The young birds where in Mullingar for the first young bird race of the season. What a fairy tale start for the top loft in the Coleraine Triangle of Hanson & Harpur taking the Top 15 in the club from over 440 birds in a NW wind and winning all the money and club pools. Hats off to you Jimmy on a brilliant performance. It could be a long young bird season for the rest of us. Super flying and a new club record in young birds.

Coleraine & County Derry 7/93 – R Montgomery 1346, 1346, D Dysart 1341, S Thompson 1333, T McCrudden 1332. Well done Rab Montgomery who was first and second in the Coleraine & Co Derry RPS in the first YB race from Mullingar. Seven members sent 93 birds. The first bird was Sayers Bros, UNC breeding and the second bird is Trevor Stewart breeding. Former Secretary D Dysart was next best after his return back having been out for a while.

Dungannon – E Bleeks 1319, 1274, 1274, 1274. Well done Eamon taking the first 5 positions.

Amelia Earhart 12/156 - Jimmy Quigley & Son 1289, 1283, M & M Rabbett 1283, Jimmy Quigley & Son 1272. Well done to Jimmy Quigley and Son taking 1st and 2nd prize and also well done to Ronan McCauley on clocking and making the top result in his first race. Winner was bred by Davy Booth, Herman Cuester from a 1st Open winner and a 1st Sect winner.

Foyle RPS – Malone & McKinney 1289, 1287, Millar & Doherty 1276, 1261. Well done to Malone & Mc Kinney taking the top two positions in the Foyle, nice one Sean Malone.

Super race from Mullingar for Mid Antrim -

The young bird season started last weekend with a series of Area Liberations, race marking was delayed for a day due to poor weather with collections on the Saturday evening and liberation on Sunday 16th July. The local birds with Ballymoney and Coleraine were released in Mullingar at 10.00am in a Lt West NW wind, best birds were recorded at the top end. J & M Milliken from Rasharkin & Dist was 1st & 2nd with the winner doing velocity 1478, also 1st & 2nd in the MAC. Danny Dixon was well placed with five birds together and had the top two places in Ballymoney. Best bird in the town was timed by Blair & Rankin in Ballymena & Dist, the pre-race favourites timed the winner at 13.03hrs recording velocity 1457 for the 102 miles, Surgenor Bros had 1st Kells & Dist (1450) and R H Clements 1st Harryville HPS (1450). Very few members were competing in most club’s, more birds will be expected next week when the race will again be flown from Mullingar.

Training was started early by a lot of local lofts, none better than Jimmy Hanson of the Coleraine Premier with a record breaking result taking the Top 15 for a record, well done Jimmy you will remember that one for some time. Liberation in Mullingar was at 10.00am and the winner was timed at 12.24hrs flying 116 miles.
