Thurles - 28/04/18

The East Down Combine was formed in 1967 and caters for pigeons fanciers within the County of Down in Northern Ireland. There are currently 22 clubs with approx 200 members sending a birdage of up to 5,000 pigeons each week. The Combine is currently spilt into 2 Section with a line running North to South creating an East to West Section. The membership currently race for 40 Open positions and 20 Section positions on a weekly basis. The Combine is affiliated to The Irish Homing Union Regulating and Promoting the Sport of Pigeon Racing in Ireland since 1895. CROMIE & MAGEE & SON WIN 1st EDC FROM THURLES

Saturday 28th April saw the East Down Combine birds in Thurles for the 3rd race of the season and it was a lovely morning so the birds were in the air at 9.15am into a light Northerly wind which in contrast to the first two races saw the velocities lower with only the top 9 birds in the Open making over the 1400 ypm mark. This week the leading birds were spread across the Combine with the Ballynahinch partnership of Cromie & Magee & son leading the field on 1413 ypm with Ballylesson’s John Kirk & Sons next on 1408ypm . The Annalong team of K Rooney , son & dtr have the next three and then it’s back to Ballynahinch to Cromie & Magee & son to complete the top six in the Open .
The first two birds in the Open were the first two in the West Section whilst the Rooneys had the top 6 in the East section . Looking through the Combine results I noticed a couple of clubs where all 12 club places were filled by the one loft Reggie & David Moore did it in Bangor and the Rooney family did it Annalong , two lofts in top form .
