Gowran Park (2) - 12/05/18

Post by willie reynolds »

It was a testing weekend for all those involved in arranging the race, firstly the weather at the re-arranged Fermoy when initially the decision was to delay the marking. A decision before lunchtime Friday put the race back on and race marking was to take place after all. With another massive number of bird’s en-route to the race on Friday night another decision was made to divert to the shorter Gowran Park. Despite the annoyance it all turned out well and birds made light work of the journey to home lofts following liberation at 8.15am, and most birds are home.

In a tight finish Philip Boyd of Annaghmore was just ahead of two birds for Hagan & Rowney of Portadown & Drumcree. The breed of 1st Open Hen is a Soontjen 2016 bird, Wee Jean is bred from the lofts old Soontjen line, fed on Beyers Double U. She has won 3 Top 10 positions in a very competitive club with average 500 plus birds sent every week.

LORDS V COMMONS PIGEON RACE

11 May 2018
On Wednesday 13th June, the Royal Pigeon Racing Association will be releasing 650 birds from Bletchley Park in Milton Keynes at the Lords v Commons pigeon race. Each pigeon will be designated to an MP or Peer. Chairman of the All Party Parliamentary Pigeon Racing Group, Chris Davies MP, and Vice Chair, Chris Evans MP, will be in attendance along with Iain Stewart, MP for Milton Keynes South and Nigel Adams, MP for Selby and Alnsty.

90 years ago, the last Lords vs Commons race took place in the quadrangle of the House of Commons, the birds being released by Sir Cooper Rawson MP (below). Back then, pigeon racing was widely supported and respected by MPs and Peers, with a Lords v Commons race held every year. Fast forward to 2018 and this iconic race is being recreated to commemorate 100 years since the end of World War One.
The race will be raising funds for the ex-serviceman’s charity, Combat Stress, the UK’s leading charity for veterans’ mental health. The RPRA is encouraging MPs and Peers to sponsor a pigeon for the race, with all proceeds going to the charity Combat Stress.

The progress of the race can be tracked online on the RPRA’s website and the winner will be presented with a small trophy.

Ian Evans, Chief Executive of the RPRA, comments: ‘We are delighted to be recreating the Lords v Commons race with the All Party Parliamentary Pigeon Racing Group ninety years on. We hope this celebration will encourage MPs to reignite their support of pigeon racing and again make this an annual event.’

https://www.rpra.org/lords-v-commons-pigeon-race/

Fanciers across the whole of the UK were invited to contact their local MP and encourage them to make application to the All Party Parliamentary Pigeon Racing Group. My small contribution was I gathered up 30 such applications which were sent to local MP Ian Paisley and a reply this week said he had contacted Chairman of the Group Mr Chris Davis MP and that he would be more than happy to support the activities and actions of this wonderful society. A sample copy of letters of application are published this week again in the fancy press, hopefully the local fancy take up this request.

On another subject I raised the matter of Ballymena & Dist HPS Clubroom rates regarding the agreed discount and contacted local MLA Robin Swann who had brought this matter up in the NI Assembly. Had a recent reply and it was stated since October 2016 through to April 2018 some 23 individual applications had been received of which 20 had been approved. Surely we must have many more clubrooms than that able to have a rate reduction? Thanks again to Robin Swann for his efforts in getting the reduction in place.
