Alistair Stuart Mcnaghten had the pleasure of presenting young Joseph Larkin with the £1000 prize money this morning .
Also congratulations to all other prize winners . Fantastic pigeons being clocked also .
Alan was kind enough to send me over a bit of info around this yearling .
Firstly I want to thank the members of Larne and District for running a nomination gold ring race, it really added a bit of extra excitement to what was already a fantastic race. The decision by the race controller to bring both races forward was inspired. I have a lot of friends in the club and really enjoy the moot nights and hope to see them back up and running, if only for the egg and onion sandwiches! and the great nights craic.
The winner of the nom GB24D38098 or as we call him The Stray cock has a great story which exemplifies the friendship within our sport. I came out to the loft at the beginning august last year and noticed a blue young bird sitting on the loft, so I opened up and in her hopped hit the drinker and up onto the top perch in the section! I caught him up and went through the process we are all too familiar of, reporting strays. I try and help any bird that comes in return home, they all deserve a chance.
So the reply comes back Mr Tom Marshall was the owner, called up my old friend and arranged a return, the cock was one of a kit he had gotten off Derrick Edgar of Dromore swapped in friendship as we do. Long story short the bold Stray cock came back a few days later and then again, so Tom being the gent he is said it was obvious he liked living in Aghagallon more than his place so he was transferred into the boys name.
I knew instantly he was a bit special, first home from tosses etc the presence in the loft, his first race was Cloughmartin 4th club and continued to show predominantly, I hadn’t been at myself for the past couple of years and my results showed that but the Stray came regardless. Entered into Dunmanway YB National he lit to win first club, 21st section E and 99th open….
Started out his yearling season winning Kilbeggan and was 2nd from Grenagh so off to Dunmanway OB Nat, where he finished 1st club, 2nd section E and 12th National and 1st Larne and District Yearling Golden Ring!
Thanks to all my club mates and friends who have contacted me, thanks to Greg O’Dowd for the first class training and thanks again to the members of Larne and District on a well organised nomination race. I’ll maybe have to give him a better name now
Great message from Alan .
Good luck folks for the rest of the season.
Jamie McGarel
