Hard test from NIPA Bude –

The third race from across the water was from Bud in Cornwall, it was the most difficult to date, result was dominated by lofts in Newry Co Dow. John J Mcabe was best followed by clubmates in Newry & District Mark Maguire & Son then Owen Markey for Ballyholland and Alan Craig from Laurelvale top in Sction E.

Shane Johnston wins hard race from Bude -

The Nipa travelled to Bude in North Cornwall for their third channel race of the season on Saturday 13th June. The birds were released at 8.45am in west north westerly winds and a tough race followed.

Shane Johnston and son Lewis of Ballymena & District recorded their best ever result by winning 1st Mid Antrim Combine, 1st Section B and 8th Open Nipa 4724 birds. Shane timed his 2yo blue hen at 15.28pm and was 10 minutes clear in both Ballymena & District and the Mid Antrim Combine. The father of the pigeon is a son of Gary Gibson's golden cock paired to a granddaughter of Gary's 'Golden Couple'

Brian Swann & Son were runner up in the Combine on 1233 and placed 5th Section & 42nd Open. Brian's winner a 2 year old Herman Ceuster hen was bred by Sid Collins.
Johnston Eagleson & Sons of Ballymena were placed 3rd Combine, 6th Section and 46th Open on 1232. Their 2yo blue hen won 1st club, 4th Combine & 5th Section two weeks ago from 1st Dale and last season won 2nd Combine & 2nd Section beaten by a loftmate from Bude. Sire was the Van Den Bulck 'Dirk' cock which is sire of 13 x 1st and the dam a self bred Louis Thijs (Paddy & William McManus) x Lambrecht (Danny Dixon).

Next best was Danny Dixon on 1231 placed 7th Section & 47th Open. Danny's bird was a granddaughter of his 1st Open Infc yb Penzance National winner 'Dixie Chic' and she has flown all three channel races to date. Ballymena members Bertie Blair and Robin Service took 5th & 6th Combine followed by the Ahoghill winners Paddy & William McManus who had the top two in the club with the first timed doing 1218. Their winner a 2 year old Frans Zwols grizzle hen sitting overdue eggs.

William Gilbert snr and son William jnr were best in Randalstown on 1163. The pencil blue cock has now won three channel races and has also been second on three other occasions. The Kenyon parents were bought at a sale of C & L Woodside's of Ballyclare. Harold Cubitt won Rasharkin on 1161 a Hartog of Roy Erwin breeding and Marc Neilly was best in Broughshane on 1072. Winning cheq cock flying to the perch was from Bertie Blair.

Reminder regarding RPRA Meritorious Awwads 2026

For as long as I can remember the main awards regarding individual bird performance were competed for in two cross channel races a fortnight apart. The NIPA have 8 Sections and the current races are 2nd Dale and Penzance, we now have a Best Performance for Southern Ireland members long overdue. We have the usual Mileage Awards and look how well the Irish have done over the years in the National Championship. It’s now well advertised and no excuse for claims to be made. The Irish Region Awards have in recent years been presented at NIPA Ladies Night while the RPRA Awards are part of the Blackpool Show weekend.

A most recent addition was the Jimmy burrows Memorial Trophy for Best OB Performance ober 0-250 miles and 251 to 450 miles individual bird. It was won for the first time by D & J Campbell of Eastway and we also have Best YB Performance won in 20325 by Sam Ogle of Drumnavaddy. William Knowles a long serving committee member and 90 years young has put up a cup for Best bird 0-250 miles, 251-450 miles and Over 450 miles. Not won yet and not sure this will often be achieved by and individual bird. Since we have Champion OB and Champion YB it might be the opportunity to make this award Best Lomg Distance Performance. With 3 France races it should be won ever year. For the other arrangement we could award a Diploma of Merit on any occasions a claim is submitted and approved.
