Farming Life - Wednesday 22/06/11

The News Letter, now in its fourth century of continuous publication, has come a long way since it first saw the light of day in 1737. On a visit to Northern Ireland, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth described the longevity of the newspaper as "an achievement in which the people of Northern Ireland can take great pride". Pigeon News is featured in the Farming Life supplement each Wednesday.

Farming Life - Wednesday 22/06/11

Post by willie reynolds »

The longest race prior to France was flown last weekend with the NIPA birds released in Penzance at 7.10am in a Westerly wind, the race was flown on Sunday 19th June having been delayed for one day due to weather problems. What a cross channel season we have had, Talbenny followed by the Yearling Nat Sennen Cove then Bude last week and finally Penzance. The weather has been poor over the last few weeks and returns were not as good or near as good as earlier in the year, many perches were empty last weekend and a good job the season is complete except for France where birds will have been especially set up for the three races including the Grand Nat Kings Cup to be flown on 1st July.

Race Marking for St Malo Old Bird Nat, arrangements are as follows. All monies/entry fees etc for the race will be collected on Tuesday 21st June, the Cullybackey Centre will be open between 8.30pm and 9.30pm. Race marking for St Malo will be early morning as usual Wednesday 22nd June between 6.30am and 9.30am. Please note all clocks will be set on Wednesday morning after transporter leaves. Weather permitting the race will be flown from St Malo (France) on Friday 24th June.

Best in Mid Antrim was W & J Smyth of the Ballymena & Dist in their favourite race of the year and Billy missing the event due to holidays. The partners timed at 14.44hrs to record velocity 1276 for the 329 miles. A & N Young from Ahoghill were next best doing velocity 1243, followed by Roy Clements best in Harryville and Alan Darragh best in Cullybackey HPS. These birds will be well placed in both the Sect B and NIPA Open result. With a Sunday race a number of results are missing, more details will be published later. We had a fantastic Champions League final with Simon Millar on velocity 1227 ahead of Paddy McManus (Ahoghill) 1201. A first win for Randalstown many congratulations and thanks to all lofts involved and James Harris who looked after the admin. Can I thank as well Harry McCloy who changed a wheel for me on my final day training the old birds, I would have been beat without his help.

Claims for the RPRA (Irish Region) Meritorious Award for single bird performance Talbenny and Penzance should be made to Region Secretary Robert Reid within 14 days. The award is available in every NIPA Section and hopefully claims will be made from each area, for the best Overall Velocity the winner gets the Irish Region Trophy presented at the annual NIPA Ladies Night.

Homer will commence training with young birds very soon, collections will now be made in Ballymoney HPS, Rasharkin, Cullybackey, Galgorm/Cracehill, Ahoghill HPS, Randalstown, Antrim/Crumlin etc. Tel: 07538 238364 to make arrangements.

Foyle Valley Combine Update –

With the old bird season coming to a end Penzance was the second last race for old birds and making his mark this year in the channel was the Creggan loft of Derry and district fancier Anthony McCrudden with fanciers having a difficult channel campaign with a lot of heavy losses this loft is rewarded for his good hard genuine work and tops the combine with only five birds recorded in race time. Another fancier worth a mention is Maiden City rps winner Robbie Hegarty who quietly working away gets in when it matters and keeps the Garden City flag flying. Also having one of their best seasons is Cooley Bros Derry and district hps taking third with Londonderry rps winner Toby & Martin Gallagher, close behind in fourth Mr & Mrs Paul Maxwell Foyle rps fifth. The last race of the 2011 old bird season this week is from St Malo in France approx 500mls and this is where the elitist attempt to top of the season with the most sought after title a bird on the day in the North West. Good luck to all lofts competing.
