Farming Life - Wednesday 06/07/11

The News Letter, now in its fourth century of continuous publication, has come a long way since it first saw the light of day in 1737. On a visit to Northern Ireland, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth described the longevity of the newspaper as "an achievement in which the people of Northern Ireland can take great pride". Pigeon News is featured in the Farming Life supplement each Wednesday.

Three in a row for Tom Marshall & Son

What a result we had in the East Down Combine Old Bird Derby from St Malo in France Tom Marshall & Son topped the EDC Open result for the third season on the trot, probably never achieved before in the history of the organisation. All told this top loft has won the OB Derby five times and added to that are 4 x 1st Open YB Derby and several other times getting close. Winning velocity was 1586 and he tops the West Sect, runner-up N Maguire from Annsborough had 1st East Sect.

Champion Racer for P & J Boal

In 2010 the P & J Boal loft from Dromore HPS won the RPRA (Irish Region) Best all round Performance and 0-250 Miles awards with their great racer Champion Baard. To crown a fantastic performance the loft made the trip to Blackpool for the Show of the Year in January and brought the Tony Cornwall Trophy back to Northern Ireland. It was an experience they will never forget.

In the old bird season this year they have another fantastic racer a yearling Blue Cheq hen that has won from Tullamore 2nd Club 347b, 2nd Sect D 109/2838 doing velocity 1571 (beaten by loft-mate). In the Rosscarbery Yearling Hens National she won 1st Club, 1st Sect D & 2nd Open NIPA 372/1699 doing velocity 1664. Finally in the Fermoy 5 Bird Championship 3rd Sect D & 7th Open NIPA 560/2488 doing velocity 1586. Winnings were approx. £550.

Her full nest-sister was raced by Rab Rea of Horseshoe in Larne to win 1st Club, 3rd Sect C & 5th Open NIPA 1045/20,842 doing velocity 1503.

Sire & Dam are the best Willy van Herck that P & J Boal have had for a number of years and produced many winners as well as winning themselves. The sire “Karlske” is a winner 9 x 1sts and the dam “Kliene 96 has won 3 x 1st Club plus 1st Sect and 5th, 9th & 12th Open NIPA.

Derry City bird on the day

Foyle Valley Combine St Malo – A fantastic two arrivals on the day the Concannon Bros in the Maiden City at 7.59pm and Gerry McCauley into Strabane around the same time.

Maiden City – Concannon Bros 1405.

With the late liberation at St Malo few fanciers if any thought that any birds would be timed into Derry City, how wrong the experts were this time and early birds were timed across Northern Ireland. Concannon Bros of the Maiden City RPS timed their good 4 year old Blue Cheq cock now named “Northern Dancer” at 7.59pm flying 503 miles, furthest flying bird on the day to win 1st Club, 1st City of Derry Fed, 1st Foyle Valley Combine, 1st Sect H and 78th Open NIPA. This super racer has flown France on three occasions in 2009 he won 2nd Club, 2nd City of Derry Fed, 4th Sect H and 153rd Open NIPA. Last season he was the furthest flying pigeon timed in the Kings Cup from Plaudren flying 538 miles. He is bred from a daughter of John Orritts 2nd Sect Perpignan at 802 miles paired to grandson of Ronnie Nevin's old Robert Hunter hen. Steeped in the very best long distance lines this one.

Good Returns in the Grand National -

The best two birds in the Muckamore Centre were in Belfast Bingham & Seaton of the Ligoniel & Dist timed at 18.48hrs to record velocity 1125 for the 491 miles followed by Brown & Anderson of the Shankill & Dist racing in the Ulster Federation timing at 18.53hrs recording velocity 1122 for 492 miles. Former winner Alan Darragh from Cullybackey timed at 19.28hrs recording velocity 1116 for 513 miles, 1st Cullybackey and best in Mid Antrim Combine. Results are very much subject to correction with a lot of the distances approx for a number of lofts.
