The first big race of the NIPA old bird season was the Inland National flown from Rosscarbery in County Cork on Saturday 17th May. Early morning mist at the race-point delayed the liberation, strings were cut and birds released at 11.15am in a brisk Southerly wind. Conditions in Southern Ireland were good and in the helping conditions birds romped home with full returns almost everywhere. Glen Buckley and son Johnny add another top title to their ever growing CV by winning 1st Open for Annaghmore recording velocity 2152ypm. One of their famous Soontjen family of birds the sire was winner of the Mallow 5 Bird Championship and NIPA Young Bird of the Year in 2007. The dam was always stock, related as you would expect to all the lofts top producers and winners. The winner was a yearling Blue Pied hen racing on Roundabout, in last season’s YB National she was placed 4th Sect E & 20th Open NIPA Rosscarbery 407/3655 on velocity 1346. Glen has named the bird “Kildaragh Julie” after his daughter who celebrated her birthday on Saturday.

Runner-up for the second time this year was the top Cookstown partnership of Glen Smith and father who in fact won this particular race a number of years back. The Smyth team are having a season to remember and last week from Mallow had 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th & 7th Sect A – something not done before. In Rosscarbery they can add 1st, 2nd, 5th, 6th, & 7th Sect A and 2nd, 46th, 82nd, 85th & 106th Open NIPA plus almost £1,000. Their Blue yearling hen is the very best of their Soontjen family of birds, sent to the race sitting eggs 9 days. One the same way bred, a Blue cock has won over the last 2 seasons 2nd Sect A & 6th Open Rosscarbery OB Nat plus 1st & 2nd Sect A in the Fermoy 5 Bird.
