HARPER & YOUNG TAKE TOP TWO FROM SKIBBEREEN CLASSIC by Clifford Browne

The first of this year’s Old Bird Derby races was flown on Saturday 16th May from Skibbereen and turned out to be a really first class event which saw an entry of almost 1400 birds these were released at 9am into a WNW wind but from the velocities put up by the leading birds it must have had very little North in it with the leading birds making over 1700 ypm .

The Portavogie lofts of Drew Harper & Martin Young have been turning in some great performances already this year starting with Tullamore when they took the top three in the Open from this race and then in 2014 who can forget the 2nd Navan YB race when they had the first 11 places in the open and then from Mt Charles they took the top 3 in the open and in these and other races they had other birds well placed.
Their first two birds from this year’s Classic from Skibbereen and winning 1st and 2nd open are two blue Yearling hens and are sisters and as you can see from the result they finish on the same yard .
Racing roundabout this partnership are racing birds from Bob Donaldson and Stephen Gore and it is from a Bob Donaldson cock paired to a Stephen Gore hen that these two hens are bred the family being van Dork and the partnership wish to thank both these fanciers and also Alfie Hawthorne. They are also very grateful to their great friend John Adair who trains Drew and Martin’s pigeons regularly several days each week and this work is certainly paying off .
A very close third were the 2014 fanciers of the year the Crossgar partnership of McCartan & Woodsides and this loft as reported on a number of occasions has a tremendous record from Skibbereen for in 2014 they had success from this race point winning 1st open from the 2nd Young Bird Derby from there having already on previous occasions won this J Ringland Classic 3 times and they have also won the INFC from here as well, not to mention other positions won from this racepoint which also includes 1st North section also with the INFC .

Here are a few details on their pigeon which was 3rd Open from Skibbereen this year
The sire is their Soontjen cock which topped the North Section from the Skibbereen OB National.
The dam was bred by K.Rooney, son & dtr of Annalong and is the same way bred as the pigeon raced by G & P Brown which topped the North Section from the Skibbereen YB National and then won the Combine from the Skibbereen OB Classic the following year.

This Old Bird classic was just that a first rate classic event and if you look down the results there are many outstanding individual loft performances and it was an excellent race with great returns . Congratulations to all those in the prizes . The top 30 places were:

Once again the 2bird winners are right up there at the top of the Combine results in fact from the 1st Pilmore Beach the 1st and 2nd open Combine are the 1st and 2nd birds in the 2 bird club with Francis Gilmore in 3rd place with this super racing pigeon of his the 3yearold Soontjen cock which had won both the Tullamore races in the Comber club this year finishing well up in the EDC Open in both of these races to which he can now add 2nd club 15th open 2nd East Section ,3rd 2 bird club Pilmore Beach and then from the Skibbereen Classic he finished 1st club 17th open 14th Section ,what a good one to own . I may have misled readers in the first report on this pigeon when I said that Francis had bought him from Colin Telford in fact Colin had gifted him to Francis as a young Bird and what a good one he has turned out to be . The Lofts of C & D Smyth & sons of Bally lesson and R Moore & Son of Bangor have both their birds in the result from Pilmore Beach ,another great achievement . The 2 bird club sees fanciers using their knowledge of their birds very well in the selection of their entry making this a very competitive club .
