Penzance/Classic - 21/06/15

Since my last column the East Down Combine have held 3 events, the Penzance and the Penzance classic followed a few days later by the Old Bird Derby from St Malo which brings to an end the Combine’s Old Bird Programme. The first of these races was the Penzance / Penzance Classic which was scheduled for Saturday June 20th but again because of the weather forecast for the Saturday was poor race marking was delayed for a day with the birds going on the Friday night for a possible Sunday race if the weather permitted. Weather on Sunday morning was suitable for a liberation and the birds were away at 7.15 into West wind and this saw the open winners finishing this channel race as they had started the season and I
refer of course to the Cloughey partnership of Harper and Young. 2nd Open were the Ballylesson winners C & D Smyth & Sons and I’ll say more about this pigeon when I take a look at the Penzance Classic result. At 3rd open was Downpatrick’s Jackie Crossan who had a great weekend’s racing. Jackie is a former King’s Cup winner and from this year’s Penzance and Classic he clocked two in the top 20 birds in the Penzance Classic. His top 2 birds were timed at 2nd and 15th open. The pigeons also achieved 3rd open and 19th open; 2nd and 11th East section in the normal Penzance race. To finish a perfect winning weekend Jackie also took the first 6 positions in Downpatrick HPS.
